ExamView alternative: an ExamView test generator for Mac after the ExamView end of life date

ExamView earned the place it holds in American classrooms. For two decades it was the program that turned a publisher test bank into a printed exam, and it did the unglamorous parts well: a QuickTest wizard that built a draft in four clicks, fourteen question types including numeric response and matching, scrambled versions so no two students in a row saw the same paper, and bubble sheet output for the scanner in the department office. Echo360 states that ExamView content ships with more than 12,000 titles from over 50 publishing partners, which is why so many instructors never chose it at all. It arrived on a disc in the back of an instructor edition.

ExamView reached end of life on June 30, 2024. Echo360, which owns it, states that it will no longer provide updates, security patches or technical support for any version, and directs users to EchoExam. ExamView is also a 32 bit application, so it has not installed on macOS since Catalina in 2019. Its File menu still exports to Canvas, Brightspace, Moodle, Sakai, Schoology and three Blackboard formats, and that export menu is the practical way to rescue an existing bank before the Windows machine holding it is replaced. VidQuiz is a browser tool that writes new multiple choice, true or false and short answer questions from a recorded video and exports QTI 1.2, Moodle GIFT, Blackboard tab delimited, Google Forms CSV, CSV and PDF. It does not open .bnk or .tst files.

Two facts now push people to search for an alternative, and both come from the vendors themselves. Echo360 states that ExamView reached end of life on June 30, 2024 and that it will no longer provide updates, security patches or technical support for any version. Separately, ExamView is a 32 bit application, and Goodheart-Willcox tells its instructors plainly that since macOS 10.15 Catalina, Apple no longer supports 32 bit applications including ExamView. A Mac bought at any point in the last six years cannot run it. VidQuiz solves the half of that problem ExamView was never built for. Paste a link to a recorded lecture or training session and it writes multiple choice, true or false and short answer questions with the correct answer, a written explanation and a timestamp on each one, then exports QTI 1.2, Moodle GIFT, Blackboard tab delimited, Google Forms CSV, plain CSV or a PDF with the answer key. It runs in a browser, so the operating system stops mattering. It does not open .bnk or .tst files, and the section below on rescuing an existing bank is written on that assumption.

ExamView was a Windows program for arranging questions somebody else had already written, and it is now unsupported on every platform. VidQuiz runs in a browser on any operating system and writes the questions from a video, then hands you the LMS file formats. Neither one reads the other one file types, so the honest comparison is about which job you have today.

Is ExamView going away?

It already went. Echo360 states that as of June 30, 2024, ExamView reached its end of life and that it will no longer provide updates, security patches or technical support for any version. That is a support decision rather than a kill switch, so a copy installed on a working Windows machine still opens today.

What ends is everything around the program. There is nobody to call when an install breaks, no patch when Windows changes something underneath it, and no fix if a publisher ships a bank in a format a 2024 build does not recognize. Echo360 puts that plainly in its own notice, warning that continued use past end of life may expose you to increased security vulnerabilities, compatibility issues and potentially reduced functionality.

The practical deadline is not a date on a calendar, it is the day the department replaces the desktop it is installed on. Nothing you can download will put it on the new one in a supported state. That is why the export menu matters more than the end of life notice does, and why it is worth spending an afternoon on it while the old machine is still under a desk.

Does ExamView work on Mac?

Not on any Mac sold in the last six years. Goodheart-Willcox, which distributes ExamView banks with its textbooks, tells instructors directly that starting with macOS 10.15 Catalina, Apple no longer supports 32 bit applications including ExamView, and that you need PointSolutions Desktop to access and use your ExamView content instead.

Older documentation still lists Mac OS 10 and above in the system requirements, which is where the confusion comes from. The requirement was written when 32 bit applications ran on macOS. Catalina shipped in October 2019 and removed that ability for everything, so the requirement stopped being true without anybody editing it.

The workarounds are the familiar ones and they all cost something. Run Windows in a virtual machine and you are maintaining a second operating system for one program. Remote into a departmental Windows desktop and you are dependent on the network and on somebody keeping that box alive. Walk to a lab machine and every one question edit becomes a trip. If the Mac problem is what sent you searching, a tool that runs in the browser removes the dependency rather than routing around it.

What is replacing ExamView?

Echo360 replaced it with EchoExam, a browser based test generator that you reach through a regional login page for the Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific. Echo360 describes it as carrying 50 publishing partners, 12,000 titles and a bank of more than 15,000 approved assessment questions, and states that it supports 19 question types including NCLEX.

For a department whose whole reason for using ExamView was the publisher banks, EchoExam is the obvious move, because the publisher relationships came with it. That is a genuine advantage and no browser tool that writes its own questions can match it. If your Anatomy and Physiology bank came free with the textbook, the product that inherited the deal with your publisher is the one that keeps it.

The gap EchoExam does not fill is the one that sends most people to a video tool. A test generator arranges questions that already exist. If the material you need to assess is a two hour recorded lecture or a training session you ran last week, there is no bank yet, and the generator has nothing to arrange. That is the split worth being honest about before you pick either one.

How do I export ExamView to Canvas?

Open the test or bank on a machine that still runs ExamView, click File, hover over Export and choose Canvas, then save the zip and import it in Canvas under Settings and Import Course Content. The version 11 export menu carries a Canvas target, so the direct route exists.

When the direct route misbehaves, the long standing fallback among instructors is to export WebCT CE 6 or Vista 4 instead and import that zip into Canvas as a QTI package. Both files are zips of the same broad family, and Canvas is more forgiving of the WebCT structure than its age suggests. It is worth trying if the Canvas export imports with questions missing.

Do the export before anything else in the migration, and do it for every bank at once rather than course by course. The machine that can still run ExamView is a diminishing asset, and the export menu is the only part of the program that produces something a supported system can read. What is the best ExamView alternative for a Mac?

It depends entirely on which half of the job you have. If you own publisher banks and need them in a supported product, EchoExam is the direct successor and it runs in a browser, so the Mac problem disappears. If you own recordings and no questions, a video based generator does the part EchoExam cannot.

The other name that comes up in the same searches is Respondus 4, which publishes exams into Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace and Moodle and handles 15 question types. It is worth knowing that Respondus 4 is Windows only too, so it trades one desktop dependency for another, and its campus license starts at $1,695 a year. What you will not find is a Mac program that opens .bnk files. ExamView never had a supported 64 bit Mac build, so there is nothing for a third party to be compatible with. Anyone who tells you their tool reads ExamView banks natively is worth checking carefully. The realistic paths are the export menu on an old Windows machine, or writing the questions again from the source material, which is the job VidQuiz automates.

Is ExamView free?

ExamView was almost never bought directly. It arrived bundled with a textbook, on a disc or through a publisher instructor site, which is why so many people who use it every semester have never seen a price for it. Echo360 no longer sells it at all, so there is no current price to quote.

EchoExam, its replacement, has no published price either. The Echo360 product page ends in a request form rather than a checkout, and the software directories that rank for the query disagree with each other: one lists $99.99 per user per month, another lists $99.99 per feature, and neither cites Echo360. A number that appears in two places with two different units is a number nobody has confirmed.

That matters for planning, because it means an ExamView migration has an unpriced step in it. Can I still use my publisher test banks after ExamView end of life?

Yes, with two conditions. You need a machine that already runs ExamView, and you need to get the content out through the File and Export menu into a format your learning system reads. The banks themselves do not expire. What expires is your ability to reinstall the program that opens them.

Publishers have not all moved at the same pace. Goodheart-Willcox still documents ExamView for its instructors and updated that guidance in 2026. W. W. Norton distributes test banks in several formats including ExamView files and zips formatted for course management systems, and SAGE ships ExamView on selected titles. So the disc in the back of next year instructor edition may well still be an ExamView bank.

Check what else your publisher offers before you plan around the ExamView copy. Many of the same banks ship as a Word document or as a course cartridge for Canvas or Blackboard, and either of those is easier to live with than a file that needs an unsupported program. Ask the publisher representative directly, because the alternate formats are frequently on the instructor resources site without being advertised.

No. VidQuiz reads a video, not an ExamView bank, and there is no import path for either format. If your questions only exist inside ExamView, the way out is the File and Export menu on a machine that still runs it, which writes Canvas, Brightspace, Moodle, Sakai, Schoology and Blackboard zips. VidQuiz is for the material that has no question bank yet.

Echo360 does not publish a price. The EchoExam product page ends in a request information form, so institutions are quoted individually. Third party software directories list a starting figure of $99.99, but they contradict each other on the unit, one saying per user per month and another saying per feature, and neither attributes the figure to Echo360.

No. End of life is a support decision, not a shutdown. A copy installed on a working Windows machine keeps opening banks and printing tests. What stopped is updates, security patches and technical support from Echo360, so the risk is gradual: an install that cannot be repaired, and a machine that cannot be replaced.

Try the Canvas option in the File and Export menu first, since version 11 carries a Canvas target. If questions arrive missing or malformed, export WebCT CE 6 or Vista 4 instead and import that zip into Canvas as a QTI package. That fallback has been the common workaround among instructors for years.

No, and the gap is wide. ExamView supports fourteen types including numeric response, matching, completion, essay and case. VidQuiz writes three: multiple choice, true or false and short answer. If your assessments depend on matching or calculated numeric items, VidQuiz will not replace that part of the work and you should plan for it.
