Mentimeter alternative and alternatives to Mentimeter for quizzes that count toward a grade

Mentimeter is a live audience tool. You build a Menti of slides, the audience joins on their phones with a code, and you run polls, word clouds, Q&A and a Quiz Competition with a top 10 leaderboard. It is very good at what it is for: keeping a room of 30 or 3,000 people answering in the moment. Basic costs $11.99 per presenter per month and Pro $24.99, both billed yearly, and the education versions are $8.99 and $14.99.

The short answer

Mentimeter runs live polls and Quiz Competitions that an audience answers on their phones. Basic is $11.99 and Pro $24.99 per presenter per month billed yearly ($8.99 and $14.99 for education), and the Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle and Brightspace integration is Enterprise only. The closest live alternatives are Slido, Kahoot, Wayground and AhaSlides. If the session is recorded and you need a graded quiz in an LMS, VidQuiz writes multiple choice questions from a YouTube link and exports QTI 1.2, GIFT, Blackboard, Google Forms CSV, CSV and PDF.

People start looking for a Mentimeter alternative for two different reasons. Some want a cheaper or different live tool: another way to run polls and a quiz in a meeting or a lecture hall. For them the honest shortlist is Slido, Kahoot, Wayground and AhaSlides, and we put the published prices side by side below. Others have a different problem. The live session went well, it was recorded, and now the same material has to become a quiz that counts: a graded check in Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard or Brightspace, or a Google Form attached to a training record. Mentimeter lists its Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle and D2L Brightspace integration as an Enterprise feature, and it exports results to Excel, not questions as a quiz file.

VidQuiz solves the second problem and only the second. Paste the YouTube link to the recorded session, and it writes multiple choice questions with the correct answer marked, a short explanation and the timestamp each question came from. Then it exports QTI 1.2 for Canvas and Brightspace, a Moodle GIFT file, a Blackboard tab-delimited file, Google Forms CSV, plain CSV or a PDF with the answer key, so the quiz runs inside the system that already keeps the grades.

Mentimeter keeps a live room answering and keeps the quiz inside the presentation. VidQuiz does a narrower job after the room empties: it turns the recording into an LMS-ready quiz file with a timestamp on every question.

Step Mentimeter VidQuiz
Getting the content in Type slides, import a PowerPoint, Keynote or Google Slides deck on Basic, or attach files of up to 25 MB to the AI assistant Paste the YouTube link to the recorded session
Writing the questions You write Select Answer and Type Answer slides, or ask the AI assistant to draft a Menti Multiple choice questions are written from the recording itself with the correct answer marked and an explanation
Where people answer On their phones during the live presentation, with a top 10 leaderboard Wherever you import the file: the LMS quiz, a Google Form or paper
Getting scores out Export results to Excel per question or per voter on Basic and above The quiz runs in your LMS, so the gradebook records the score
Getting it into Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard or Brightspace LMS integration is listed on Enterprise only Import the QTI 1.2 zip, the GIFT file or the Blackboard tab-delimited file on any paid plan
Getting it into Google Forms Retype the questions Import the Google Forms CSV

Mentimeter rows come from its pricing pages and its help center articles on creating a Quiz Competition and on the AI assistant. VidQuiz has no speech recognition of its own: a YouTube link is the one source it reads unaided, and any other recording needs its transcript pasted, up to 60,000 characters.

What is the best alternative to Mentimeter?

It depends on what you would be replacing. If it is the live session, the closest alternatives are Slido for meetings and town halls, Kahoot for a game-show quiz, Wayground for self-paced quizzes and AhaSlides for a slide deck with polls built in. Each is a live engagement tool, and each keeps the answers inside its own dashboard.

If the recording is the source and a graded quiz is what counts, a better alternative writes the questions for you and hands you a file your LMS reads. VidQuiz takes a YouTube link to the session, writes multiple choice questions with the correct answer, an explanation and a timestamp, and exports QTI 1.2, Moodle GIFT, a Blackboard tab-delimited file, Google Forms CSV, plain CSV and a PDF with the answer key.

Many trainers and lecturers keep Mentimeter for the room and give the graded check somewhere else. The two only overlap on asking questions.

How much does Mentimeter cost per year?

Mentimeter Basic costs $11.99 per presenter per month billed yearly, which is $143.88 a year, and Pro costs $24.99, which is $299.88 a year. Education pricing is $8.99 for Basic ($107.88 a year) and $14.99 for Pro ($179.88 a year). Enterprise is quoted, and so is any order of 10 or more licenses.

Two details change the math. Basic is the only plan you can pay month to month; Pro and Enterprise cannot be bought one month at a time. And the 14-day refund applies only if you have not run Mentimeter at a live event yet. The full breakdown, including what a ten-person team pays, is in our Mentimeter pricing article.

Can Mentimeter quizzes go into Canvas or Moodle?

Only on Enterprise. Mentimeter lists LMS integration with Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle and D2L Brightspace as an Enterprise feature, and Enterprise is priced by quote. On Basic and Pro, what leaves Mentimeter is the results: an Excel export per question or per voter, plus image and PDF exports of the slides.

So a Quiz Competition built on Basic or Pro cannot become a Canvas item bank or a Moodle question bank without retyping it. VidQuiz writes a QTI 1.2 zip that Canvas and Brightspace import, a GIFT file for Moodle and a tab-delimited file for Blackboard, and the LMS then grades the multiple choice items itself.

Is Slido or Mentimeter better?

Slido is better for meetings and town halls where Q&A matters most and the audience sits inside Webex, Teams or Zoom. Mentimeter is better for presentations where the slides and the interaction are one deck, and for lecturers who want a quiz with a leaderboard in the middle of a talk.

Neither is built to produce a graded quiz file afterward. Both are worth their price when the live moment is the product. When the recording of that moment has to become an assessment, that is a separate job, and it is the one VidQuiz does.

Is there a Mentimeter alternative for corporate training?

For the live part of training, yes: Slido, Kahoot 360 and AhaSlides all sell business plans. For proving that people understood the training, a live poll is weak evidence, because nobody can show an auditor a word cloud. What holds up is a quiz in the LMS or a form, with a score per person and a date.

That is where VidQuiz fits. Record the session, paste the link, review the draft questions, and export a QTI, GIFT, Blackboard or Google Forms file. Every question carries the timestamp it came from, so a disputed answer can be checked against the recording in seconds.

When should you stay on Mentimeter?

Stay on Mentimeter if the live room is the point: polls in a keynote, a quiz with a leaderboard in a lecture hall, Q&A that needs moderating. It is very good at that, the free plan is enough to try it, and a quiz generator does not replace any of it.

Add VidQuiz when the session is recorded and the same material needs a graded quiz in the LMS, or when writing thirty questions and their wrong answers is what keeps the quiz from getting built at all. A 45-minute recording becomes a reviewed multiple choice set in a few minutes.

Good questions

Mentimeter vs VidQuiz, answered

Mentimeter has a free plan with Quiz Competition slides and Menti AI, capped at 50 participants a month in its comparison table. Exporting results to Excel and importing a PowerPoint or Google Slides deck start on Basic, which is $11.99 per presenter per month billed yearly, or $8.99 for education.
For live polls and quizzes, the main alternatives to Mentimeter are Slido, Kahoot, Wayground, AhaSlides and Poll Everywhere. For turning a recorded session into a quiz your LMS imports and grades, VidQuiz writes the questions from a YouTube link and exports QTI, GIFT, Blackboard, Google Forms CSV and PDF files.
Mentimeter exports results, not questions as a quiz file. Basic and above export results to Excel per question or per voter, and slides as images or a PDF. Its LMS integration with Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle and Brightspace is an Enterprise feature. VidQuiz exports the questions themselves as QTI, GIFT, Blackboard and Google Forms files on any paid plan.
Not for one presenter. Mentimeter Basic is $143.88 a year, or $107.88 for education, and VidQuiz Starter is $288 a year after a free demo of 3 quizzes. VidQuiz is cheaper than an Enterprise contract if what you need is quizzes in the LMS, and it is worth it when the job is a graded quiz from a recording rather than a live poll.
Yes. Run the live session in Mentimeter and record it. Paste the recording's YouTube link into VidQuiz, review the questions, and export the QTI, GIFT, Blackboard or Google Forms file for the graded quiz that follows the session.
