VidQuiz

Brisk alternative

Brisk alternative to the Brisk quiz maker for video lessons that need a QTI, GIFT or Blackboard file

Brisk Teaching earned its place on millions of Chromebooks. It is a Chrome and Edge extension that sits on top of Google Docs, Slides, YouTube and the LMS, its quiz generator is free on the Educator Free plan, and it writes up to 20 multiple choice, short answer or open-ended questions at a time in more than 50 languages. It sends the result to a Google Doc, a Google Form, Word, a Microsoft Form, Kahoot or Nearpod. For a teacher who builds quizzes in Google Forms, it is very hard to argue with.

The short answer

Brisk Teaching is a free Chrome and Edge extension with more than 20 AI tools on its Educator Free plan, including a quiz generator that writes up to 20 questions at a time and outputs to Google Docs, Google Forms, Word, Microsoft Forms, Kahoot and Nearpod. Its Canvas QTI output is reserved for the Schools and Districts plan, which is custom priced per student and bought for a whole school or district. VidQuiz is narrower and paid per user: it reads a YouTube link directly, puts a timestamp on every question, and exports QTI 1.2, Moodle GIFT, Blackboard tab-delimited, Google Forms CSV, CSV and PDF files that one teacher can buy and import today.

The friction shows up when the quiz has to become a graded assessment inside an LMS question bank. Brisk lists Canvas QTI as an output, but its own quiz generator page marks it as available for School and District plans only, and its plans page says those plans are bought school wide or district wide, not by one teacher. There is no GIFT file for Moodle and no Blackboard upload file in the list at all. VidQuiz does that one job end to end for an individual buyer. Paste a YouTube link and it reads the video itself, writes multiple choice questions with the correct answer marked, a short explanation and the timestamp each question came from, and exports QTI 1.2, Moodle GIFT, a Blackboard tab-delimited file, Google Forms CSV, CSV or a PDF with the answer key.

Brisk is a broad, free classroom assistant that lives in your browser and is sold to districts for its premium layer. VidQuiz does one thing for one buyer: it turns a recorded lesson into an LMS-ready quiz file with a timestamp on every question.

Brisk answers the question "Can we purchase at the department or individual teacher level?" by saying it is designed for school-wide or district-wide adoption. Plans change, so check briskteaching.com before you budget from this.

Getting it into Google Forms, Kahoot or Nearpod Direct output to all three on the free plan Google Forms CSV for a spreadsheet import, nothing direct for Kahoot or Nearpod

Brisk rows are taken from its Quiz Generator page and FAQ. VidQuiz has no speech recognition of its own: a YouTube link is the one source it reads unaided, and any other recording needs its transcript pasted, up to 60,000 characters.

Can Brisk make a quiz from a YouTube video?

Yes. Brisk works on the page you have open, so you open the video on YouTube, click the Brisk icon, search for the Quiz Generator and tell it the grade level, the number and type of questions and the format you want. Its own FAQ says you can generate a quiz from any webpage, article, PDF or YouTube video without copying and pasting anything.

What Brisk reads on YouTube is the text it can see, which means the transcript. A lesson with clear narration produces good questions; a demonstration with little speech gives it very little to work from. The questions also come back without any link to where in the video each point was made.

VidQuiz starts from the link itself. You paste the YouTube URL, it reads the video, and each question it writes carries the timestamp of the moment it came from. When a student disputes an answer, you click the timestamp and check the source in seconds instead of scrubbing through the lecture.

Can Brisk export a quiz to Canvas?

Only on the paid district plan. The output list on the Brisk Quiz Generator page includes Canvas QTI with a footnote that it is available for School and District plans, and the plans page puts those plans on custom, per-student pricing that a school or district buys after a sales call. On the free plan, the closest route is a Google Form, which Canvas cannot import as a quiz.

Brisk does work inside Canvas as an extension, for example to write feedback in SpeedGrader. That is a different job from putting a set of graded questions into a Canvas question bank, which needs a QTI package.

VidQuiz writes a QTI 1.2 zip with imsmanifest.xml at the root on any paid plan, the package Canvas reads through Import Course Content for Classic Quizzes and through Import Content in New Quizzes and item banks. Brightspace reads the same package in its Question Library. One teacher can buy it and import the file the same afternoon, without an admin approving an integration.

Is the Brisk quiz maker free?

Yes. Brisk says plainly that its quiz generator is on the Educator Free plan, and that plan includes unlimited usage of more than 20 tools. You can generate up to 20 questions at a time and send them to Google Docs, Google Forms, Word, Microsoft Forms, Kahoot or Nearpod at no cost.

New accounts also get 14 days of the full Schools and Districts plan when they sign up, and then move to the free plan automatically. That is why some teachers see Canvas QTI and standards alignment in their first two weeks and lose them afterwards.

So for a teacher whose quizzes live in Google Forms, Kahoot or on paper, Brisk Free is the sensible choice, and nothing on this page should talk you out of it. The case for a paid tool only starts when the quiz has to land in an LMS question bank as a file.

How much does Brisk Teaching cost for a school?

Brisk does not publish a price for its paid plans. The plans page lists Premium for schools and districts and Intelligence for districts, both as custom pricing, and explains that the price is set per student because that is how districts already budget. It also says partial rollouts are discouraged, so the purchase covers every teacher in the building.

Brisk is on several state and regional purchasing lists, including BuyBoard, TIPS, Pennsylvania intermediate units, Wisconsin CESAs, Ohio education service centers and New York BOCES, which can shorten procurement for a US district.

For a department that only needs recorded lessons turned into LMS quizzes, waiting for a building-wide contract is a lot of process for one export format. VidQuiz is bought per user, $49 a month or $288 a year on Starter, and the output is a standard file that works in whatever LMS the course already uses.

What is the best Brisk alternative for making quizzes from videos?

It depends on where the quiz has to end up. If it lives in Google Forms, Microsoft Forms, Kahoot or Nearpod, Brisk already does the job for free, and switching would cost you money and a lot of other tools. If it has to be a graded quiz in Canvas, Brightspace, Moodle or Blackboard and your school has not bought the Brisk district plan, a tool that writes the LMS file is the better fit.

VidQuiz is built for that second case. It takes a YouTube link, or the pasted transcript of a recording that was never published, and returns multiple choice questions with the correct answer, an explanation and a timestamp. The same set exports as QTI 1.2, Moodle GIFT, a Blackboard tab-delimited file, Google Forms CSV, plain CSV and a PDF with the answer key.

It is also fair to say what you give up. VidQuiz has no writing feedback, no rubric builder, no student activities, no translation into 50 languages and no browser extension. Plenty of teachers keep Brisk for everything else and use VidQuiz only for the recorded lessons that need to become a graded LMS quiz.

Does Brisk work with Moodle or Blackboard quizzes?

Not as an import file. Brisk lists Schoology, Canvas, Blackboard and Google Classroom among the platforms where it works through Google Assignments, and it can give feedback on work submitted there. Its quiz outputs, though, are Google Docs, Google Forms, Word, Microsoft Forms, Kahoot, Nearpod and, on the district plan, Canvas QTI. There is no Moodle GIFT or Moodle XML file and no Blackboard question upload file.

VidQuiz exports both. The GIFT file goes into the Moodle question bank through Import, and the tab-delimited file goes into Blackboard through Upload Questions in Ultra or Original. Neither needs a plugin or an administrator.
