Diffit alternative
Diffit alternative for YouTube video quizzes that export to Canvas, Moodle and Blackboard
Diffit for Teachers is very good at one thing: taking a text, a PDF, a topic or a video transcript and turning it into a reading passage at the level a class actually reads at, with vocabulary, summaries, questions and a teacher answer key. Teachers who differentiate for English learners, special education or MTSS tiers use it daily, and the Basic plan does a lot before you pay anything.
What you are looking at
Three quizzes VidQuiz generated from three real YouTube videos. They are saved output, not generated in your browser. Pick one to answer it, and open the source video to check the questions against what is actually said in it.
For your own video, the live demo on the home page runs the real generator once, free, with no account.
This box only holds saved quizzes.
It has not sent your link anywhere. The live demo on the home page does run it: one real generation, free, no account and no card, on the same engine paying customers use.
What VidQuiz reads: paste a YouTube link and VidQuiz watches the video itself. For any other source (Vimeo, an MP4, a screen recording, an upload) paste that video’s transcript and VidQuiz writes the questions from it.

The short answer
Diffit for Teachers turns a text, PDF, topic or video transcript into leveled reading passages with vocabulary and questions, and exports them to Google Docs, Slides, Forms, Classroom, Word, PowerPoint or PDF. Exports other than PDF and print need Premium, $14.99 a month or $149.99 a year for one teacher. Diffit has no QTI, Moodle or Blackboard file, and in its web app a YouTube video means pasting the transcript unless you install its Chrome extension. VidQuiz reads a YouTube link directly, puts a timestamp on every question and exports QTI 1.2, GIFT, Blackboard, Google Forms CSV, CSV and PDF.
The friction shows up when the questions have to become a graded quiz inside an LMS. The Diffit help center lists its export options as Google Slides, Google Docs, Google Forms, Google Classroom, Word, PowerPoint, PDF and print. There is no QTI package for Canvas or Brightspace, no GIFT file for Moodle and no Blackboard upload file, and even the Google and Microsoft exports need Premium, at $14.99 a month or $149.99 a year for one teacher. VidQuiz does the LMS job end to end. Paste a YouTube link and it reads the video itself, writes multiple choice questions with the correct answer marked, a short explanation and the timestamp each question came from, and exports QTI 1.2, Moodle GIFT, a Blackboard tab-delimited file, Google Forms CSV, CSV or a PDF with the answer key.
Diffit is a differentiation tool that writes leveled readings and the questions that go with them. VidQuiz does one narrower job: it turns a recorded lesson into an LMS-ready quiz file with a timestamp on every question.
Side by side
Diffit vs VidQuiz, honestly
A fair look at what each does well. Both are useful tools. Here is where they differ.
| Feature | VidQuiz | Diffit |
|---|---|---|
| Price for one teacher | A free demo, then $49, $99 or $199 a month. Paying yearly halves it, so Starter is $288 for twelve months | Diffit Premium is $14.99 a month or $149.99 a year, and Diffit Basic costs nothing |
| Leveled reading passages | Not offered | The core product: any topic or text rewritten at any grade level, with translation |
| Canvas and Brightspace quiz file | QTI 1.2 zip with imsmanifest.xml at the root on every paid plan | No QTI export on any plan |
| Moodle and Blackboard | Moodle GIFT and Blackboard tab-delimited files | Not in the export list |
| YouTube input | Paste the link; the video is read from it | Chrome extension, or paste the transcript yourself |
| Timestamps on questions | Every question carries the timecode it came from | Not documented |
| Google and Microsoft exports | Google Forms CSV that you import; no Slides, Classroom, Word or PowerPoint output | Google Docs, Slides, Forms, Classroom, Word and PowerPoint on Premium |
| Activities beyond questions | Questions only | Graphic organizers, station materials, sub plans, slides and an activity library |
| Printable paper quiz with answer key | PDF with the questions first and the answer key after a divider | PDF or print with a Teacher Answer Key |
Comparison reflects general, publicly understood positioning. Capabilities change, so check each tool for the latest. Trademarks belong to their owners.

Diffit plans, as published on web.diffit.me in October 2026
Swipe left to see all columns →
| Plan | Price | Who can buy it | Exports | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $0 | Any teacher, self-serve | PDF, print, share with colleagues | Create, edit and adapt resources; history limited to the last 90 days |
| Individual Premium, monthly | $14.99 a month | One teacher, by credit card from their own account | Google Docs, Slides, Forms, Classroom, Word, PowerPoint, PDF | Standards and MTSS alignment, full resource history, graphic organizers, advanced customization |
| Individual Premium, annual | $149.99 a year | One teacher, by credit card from their own account | Same as monthly | Same as monthly, about 16 percent cheaper than paying by the month |
| Diffit for Schools | Flat annual fee, tiered by enrollment | A school or district, by quote, purchase order accepted | Same as Premium, for all staff | Admin dashboard, free PD, dedicated support, curriculum alignment |
Figures come from the Diffit pricing page, its individual teacher subscription page and its help center. Diffit says individual plans can only be bought by credit card from the teacher account, not with a school purchase order, and a school cannot buy individual plans for several teachers at once. New Diffit accounts get premium features for a trial period and then move to Basic without being charged. Plans change, so check web.diffit.me before you budget from this.

From a YouTube lesson to a graded quiz in your LMS, step by step in each tool

| Step | Diffit | VidQuiz |
|---|---|---|
| Getting the video in | Install the Diffit Chrome extension and open it on the video, or copy the transcript from YouTube and paste it in | Paste the YouTube link into VidQuiz |
| What it produces | A leveled reading passage with vocabulary, summary, questions and activities | A quiz: multiple choice questions with the correct answer marked and a written explanation |
| Reading level control | Any grade level, plus translation into other languages | No reading level setting |
| Where each question came from | Not tied to a moment in the video | A timestamp on every question, linked back to the moment in the video |
| Getting it into Canvas or Brightspace | No QTI file; rebuild the questions by hand or route them through Google Forms | Import the QTI 1.2 zip into the course or the Question Library |
| Getting it into Moodle | No Moodle file | Import the GIFT file into the question bank |
| Getting it into Blackboard | No Blackboard file | Upload the tab-delimited file with Upload Questions, in Ultra or Original |
| Getting it into Google Forms or Classroom | Direct export on Premium | Google Forms CSV for a spreadsheet import, nothing direct for Classroom |
Diffit rows are taken from its help center articles on YouTube videos and on export options. VidQuiz has no speech recognition of its own: a YouTube link is the one source it reads unaided, and any other recording needs its transcript pasted, up to 60,000 characters.
Can Diffit make a quiz from a YouTube video?
Yes, with a step in between. The Diffit help center recommends installing the Diffit Chrome extension, opening it on the YouTube video and clicking Get Resources, at which point Diffit transcribes the video and you type a prompt. Without the extension, Diffit tells you to open the transcript on YouTube, copy all of it and paste it into the Diffit text box.
Either way, what Diffit returns is a resource built around a leveled reading passage: vocabulary, a summary, questions and activities you can add from its library. The questions come back without any link to where in the video each point was made.
VidQuiz starts from the link itself. You paste the YouTube URL into the web app, it reads the video, and every question carries the timestamp of the moment it came from. When a student disputes an answer, you click the timestamp and check the source in seconds instead of scrubbing through the lesson.
Can Diffit export to Canvas?
Not as a quiz file. The Diffit export options article lists Google Slides, Google Docs, Google Forms, Google Classroom, Word, PowerPoint, PDF and print. There is no QTI package, which is the file Canvas and Brightspace import into a question bank, so Diffit questions reach Canvas only by being retyped or pasted in one at a time.
Routing them through Google Forms does not solve it either, because Canvas cannot import a Google Form as a quiz. The form stays a form, graded outside the gradebook.
VidQuiz writes a QTI 1.2 zip with imsmanifest.xml at the root on any paid plan. Canvas reads it through Import Course Content for Classic Quizzes and through Import Content in New Quizzes and item banks, and Brightspace reads the same package in its Question Library. One teacher can buy it and import the file the same afternoon.
How much does Diffit cost?
Diffit Basic costs nothing. Diffit Premium for one teacher is $14.99 a month or $149.99 a year, which the Diffit pricing page describes as $29 a year cheaper than paying monthly. Diffit for Schools is a flat annual fee tiered by student enrollment and covers every staff member in the school, quoted on request.
Two buying rules catch people out. Diffit says an individual plan can only be bought by credit card from the teacher account, so a school purchase order will not work, and a school cannot buy individual plans for several teachers at once. Diffit also points out that its school license costs about the same as a handful of individual plans.
VidQuiz is priced for a different job and costs more: $49 a month on Starter, or $288 for a year. It is worth paying for only when the output has to be an LMS quiz file. The Diffit pricing breakdown linked below goes through every Diffit plan in detail.
What is the best Diffit alternative for making quizzes from videos?
It depends on what the lesson needs. If students need the content rewritten at their reading level, in their language, with scaffolds, nothing on this page replaces Diffit and you should keep it. If the job is a graded quiz in Canvas, Brightspace, Moodle or Blackboard built from a recorded lesson, a tool that writes the LMS file is the better fit.
VidQuiz is built for that second case. It takes a YouTube link, or the pasted transcript of a recording that never went to YouTube, and returns multiple choice questions with the correct answer, an explanation and a timestamp. The same set exports as QTI 1.2, Moodle GIFT, a Blackboard tab-delimited file, Google Forms CSV, plain CSV and a PDF with the answer key.
Plenty of teachers use both: Diffit for the leveled reading that goes out before or after the video, and VidQuiz for the graded check that lands in the gradebook.
Does Diffit work with Moodle or Blackboard?
Not through an import file. Diffit exports to Google and Microsoft formats and to PDF, and it can be added to ClassLink and Clever as an app, but there is no Moodle GIFT or Moodle XML file and no Blackboard question upload file in its export list.
VidQuiz exports both. The GIFT file goes into the Moodle question bank through Import, and the tab-delimited file goes into Blackboard through Upload Questions in Ultra or Original. Neither needs a plugin or an administrator.
Is Diffit worth it for a teacher who only needs quizzes?
Usually not. The value in Diffit Premium is the leveled resource, the standards and MTSS alignment and the export to Google and Microsoft tools. A teacher who only wants a graded quiz from a video pays for a reading generator and still has to move the questions into the LMS by hand.
If quizzes are the whole job, compare the cost of that retyping against a tool that writes the file. If differentiated readings are most of the job, Diffit Premium at $149.99 a year is one of the better value tools in the category.

Why people pick VidQuiz
Built around video, end to end
An LMS file, not a document
QTI 1.2 for Canvas and Brightspace, GIFT for Moodle and a tab-delimited file for Blackboard on every paid plan, so questions land in the question bank instead of a Google Doc.
The YouTube link, read directly
Paste a YouTube URL in the web app and the video is read from the link. No extension to install and no transcript to copy. For a recording that never went to YouTube, paste its transcript.
A timestamp on every question
Each question records the moment in the video it came from, so you can check a doubtful answer in seconds and send a student straight to the part that explains it.
