Nearpod alternative
Nearpod alternative and websites like Nearpod for video quizzes that land in your LMS question bank
Nearpod is a live lesson platform. You build or borrow a lesson, students join with a code, and every slide can be a poll, a multiple choice check, a Draw It, a Time to Climb game or an interactive video that pauses for questions. Silver costs nothing, Gold is $159 a year and Platinum is $397 a year, all billed annually.
What you are looking at
Three quizzes VidQuiz generated from three real YouTube videos. They are saved output, not generated in your browser. Pick one to answer it, and open the source video to check the questions against what is actually said in it.
For your own video, the live demo on the home page runs the real generator once, free, with no account.
This box only holds saved quizzes.
It has not sent your link anywhere. The live demo on the home page does run it: one real generation, free, no account and no card, on the same engine paying customers use.
What VidQuiz reads: paste a YouTube link and VidQuiz watches the video itself. For any other source (Vimeo, an MP4, a screen recording, an upload) paste that video’s transcript and VidQuiz writes the questions from it.

The short answer
Nearpod is an interactive lesson platform: students join a live or self-paced lesson and answer polls, multiple choice, Draw It, Time to Climb and interactive video questions inside it. Silver is free for 40 students a lesson, Gold is $159 a year and Platinum $397 a year. Nearpod does not export questions as a QTI, GIFT or Blackboard file. VidQuiz writes multiple choice questions from a YouTube link, timestamps each one and exports QTI 1.2, GIFT, Blackboard, Google Forms CSV, CSV and PDF.
Teachers start looking for a Nearpod alternative for one of two reasons. The first is cost: the free Silver plan caps a lesson at 40 students and 300 MB of storage, and a teacher with three sections of 30 hits that wall fast. The second is where the questions end up. Nearpod questions live inside a Nearpod lesson. Its reports download as PDF or CSV and a lesson prints as a PDF, but Nearpod's help articles describe no way to send the questions themselves to a Canvas, Moodle or Blackboard question bank, and the LMS integration is a school and district feature.
VidQuiz solves the second problem and only the second. Paste a YouTube link to a lecture, a flipped lesson or a recorded class, and it writes multiple choice questions with the correct answer marked, a short explanation and the timestamp each question came from. Then it exports QTI 1.2 for Canvas and Brightspace, a Moodle GIFT file, a Blackboard tab-delimited file, Google Forms CSV, plain CSV or a PDF with the answer key, so the quiz becomes ordinary items in the LMS you already grade in.
Nearpod runs the lesson students sit through and keeps every question inside it. VidQuiz does a narrower job: it turns a recorded lesson into an LMS-ready quiz file with a timestamp on every question.
Side by side
Nearpod vs VidQuiz, honestly
A fair look at what each does well. Both are useful tools. Here is where they differ.
| Feature | VidQuiz | Nearpod |
|---|---|---|
| Price for one teacher | A free demo, then $49, $99 or $199 a month. Paying yearly halves it, so Starter is $288 for twelve months | Nearpod Gold is $159 a year and Platinum $397 a year; Silver costs nothing |
| Live lessons with a join code | Not offered | The core product: polls, Draw It, Time to Climb, Matching Pairs and more, paced by the teacher or the student |
| Ready-made lesson library | None; you bring your own video | 8,500+ lessons and 10,200+ interactive videos |
| Question types | Multiple choice only | Multiple choice, open-ended, Draw It, Drag and Drop, Matching Pairs, Fill in the Blank, polls and games |
| Canvas and Brightspace quiz file | QTI 1.2 zip with imsmanifest.xml at the root on every paid plan | No QTI export described; reports download as PDF or CSV |
| Moodle and Blackboard question banks | Moodle GIFT and Blackboard tab-delimited files | No question file; the LMS integration launches the Nearpod lesson |
| Students per quiz | No cap, because the quiz runs in your LMS | 40 on Silver, 75 on Gold, 90 on Platinum, 250 on a school plan |
| Writing questions from a long lecture | The whole set drafted from a YouTube link with the answer marked and an explanation | AI Create drafts multiple choice questions; full access starts on Gold |
| Timestamps | Every question records the moment in the video it came from | Interactive Video questions sit at the second you place them |
| School purchase order | Card checkout on every plan | Accepted for school and district plans, not for Gold or Platinum |
Comparison reflects general, publicly understood positioning. Capabilities change, so check each tool for the latest. Trademarks belong to their owners.

Figures come from nearpod.com/pricing and the Nearpod FAQ, checked in October 2026. Individual plans are charged once a year and Nearpod publishes no monthly price. Review sites still list 100 MB for Silver; the vendor page now says 300 MB. Prices change, so check nearpod.com before you budget from this.

From a recorded lesson to a graded quiz in your LMS, step by step in each tool
Swipe left to see all columns →
| Step | Nearpod | VidQuiz |
|---|---|---|
| Getting the video in | Add a YouTube video, upload a file or pick one of 10,200+ Library videos, then build an Interactive Video | Paste the YouTube link into VidQuiz |
| Writing the questions | Place multiple choice or open-ended questions on the video, or use the AI Create Question Generator (5 free generations on Silver) | Multiple choice questions are written from the video with the correct answer marked and an explanation |
| Where students answer | Inside the Nearpod lesson, live with a code or student-paced | Wherever you import the file: the LMS quiz, a Google Form or paper |
| Class size | 40 students a lesson on Silver, 75 on Gold, 90 on Platinum | No student limit, because students take the quiz in your LMS |
| Getting a grade into Canvas | School and district plans add LTI 1.3; the teacher reads the Nearpod report in SpeedGrader and types the grade | Import the QTI 1.2 zip; Canvas grades the multiple choice items itself |
| Getting it into Moodle or Blackboard | Through the school or district LMS integration | Import the GIFT file into Moodle, or upload the tab-delimited file in Blackboard Ultra or Original |
| Reusing the questions next year | Copy the lesson inside Nearpod, within your storage limit | The questions sit in your question bank as ordinary LMS items |
Nearpod rows are taken from its pricing page, FAQ and the Renaissance support articles on Interactive Video, Quizzes and the Canvas LTI 1.3 integration. VidQuiz has no speech recognition of its own: a YouTube link is the one source it reads unaided, and any other recording needs its transcript pasted, up to 60,000 characters.
What is a good alternative to Nearpod?
It depends on what you use Nearpod for. If it is the live lesson, with students on devices answering polls and drawing on slides, the closest alternatives are other lesson platforms: Pear Deck, ClassPoint inside PowerPoint, or Edpuzzle and PlayPosit when the lesson is a video. Pear Deck Premium is $149 a year, ten dollars under Nearpod Gold, and its free plan has no participant cap, so Nearpod is not the cheapest way to run a live lesson.
If the video is the source and the graded quiz is what counts, a better alternative writes the questions and hands you a file your LMS reads. VidQuiz takes a YouTube link, writes multiple choice questions with the correct answer, an explanation and a timestamp, and exports QTI 1.2, Moodle GIFT, a Blackboard tab-delimited file, Google Forms CSV, plain CSV and a PDF with the answer key.
Plenty of teachers keep Nearpod for the lesson and build the unit test somewhere else. The two tools overlap only on writing questions.
Can you export Nearpod questions to Canvas?
Not as quiz items. Nearpod's help articles describe downloading reports as PDF or CSV and printing a lesson as a PDF. They do not describe exporting the questions as a QTI package, so the questions cannot go into a Canvas item bank or be randomized into a Canvas quiz without retyping.
The Canvas integration itself is LTI 1.3 and is part of the school and district plan. According to the Renaissance support article for Canvas, the teacher opens the Nearpod Student Activity Report inside SpeedGrader and enters the grade by hand, and a Nearpod link placed in a module or an assignment description has no gradebook connection at all.
VidQuiz writes a QTI 1.2 zip on any paid plan. Canvas reads it through Import Course Content for Classic Quizzes and through Import Content in New Quizzes and item banks, and it grades the multiple choice items itself.
How much does Nearpod cost per year?
Nearpod Silver is free, Gold is $159 a year and Platinum is $397 a year. Schools and districts get a quote. Individual plans are charged once a year, are nonrefundable for partly used periods, and are paid by card from a signed-in teacher account; Nearpod does not process purchase orders for individual licenses, though it gives you an invoice so you can claim the cost back.
What changes between tiers is mostly scale. Students in one lesson go from 40 to 75 to 90, storage from 300 MB to 1 GB to 5 GB, and Gold adds Drag and Drop, running several sessions at once and full access to the AI Create Question Generator. The full breakdown is in our Nearpod pricing article.
Is Nearpod or Edpuzzle better?
Nearpod is better when the whole lesson is interactive: slides, polls, drawing, games and videos in one session a teacher can run live. Edpuzzle is better when the video is the lesson and you want to know who watched it, because it tracks viewing and can stop students skipping ahead.
Neither one gives you a question file. Both keep the questions in their own player and connect to an LMS as an app. If the end point is a graded quiz in a Canvas, Moodle or Blackboard question bank, that job belongs to a quiz generator, not to either of them.
Which websites like Nearpod work with Canvas question banks?
Very few of the interactive lesson tools do, because their business is keeping students inside their own player. Tools that write a quiz file are the ones that land in a question bank: VidQuiz exports a QTI 1.2 zip for Canvas and Brightspace, a GIFT file for Moodle and a tab-delimited file for Blackboard Ultra and Original.
Check which of the three question bank formats your LMS reads before you pick a tool. Canvas reads QTI only, so a tool that outputs Google Forms or a PDF will still leave you retyping.
When should you stay on Nearpod?
Stay on Nearpod if your class runs on live, device-based lessons, if you rely on its 8,500 ready-made lessons, or if your district already pays for a school license with the LMS integration and student accounts. A quiz generator does not replace any of that.
Add VidQuiz when the same video lesson also needs a graded test in the LMS, or when a class is bigger than your Nearpod plan allows. A 30-minute lecture becomes a reviewed multiple choice quiz file in a few minutes, and the questions stay yours if your school changes platforms.

Why people pick VidQuiz
Built around video, end to end
An LMS file, not a hosted lesson
QTI 1.2 for Canvas and Brightspace, GIFT for Moodle and a tab-delimited file for Blackboard on every paid plan, so the questions land in your question bank as ordinary quiz items.
No students-per-lesson cap
The quiz runs in your LMS, so a lecture course of 200 takes the same file as a section of 25. Nothing to upgrade when a class grows past 40.
A timestamp on every question
Each question records the moment in the video it came from, so you can settle a disputed answer in seconds and send a student back to the part that explains it.
