Respondus question format generator for Respondus 4.0 formatting and import
Formatting guides tell you how to type a Respondus file. This writes the questions from your lecture, then hands you the .txt Respondus 4.0 imports with every answer starred.
What you are looking at
Three quizzes VidQuiz generated from three real YouTube videos. They are saved output, not generated in your browser. Pick one to answer it, and open the source video to check the questions against what is actually said in it.

The short answer
A Respondus question format generator produces the plain text file Respondus 4.0 reads through Import Questions: each question numbered 1), 2), 3) in sequence, each choice lettered a), b), c), an asterisk directly in front of the correct letter, and optional feedback lines starting with ~ and @. Formatting guides teach you to type that by hand. VidQuiz writes the questions first, from a YouTube link, a lecture transcript or your notes, then exports the Respondus .txt with every key starred. Plans start at $49 a month, or $24 a month billed annually.
Most campuses that license Respondus 4.0 also publish a formatting guide for it, and they all teach the same thing: number every question, letter every choice, put an asterisk in front of the right one, turn off Word auto numbering, and hope the preview comes back clean. The guides exist because a single skipped number or a stray space after the asterisk is enough to break an import the night before an exam.
Those guides assume the questions already exist. For a lot of faculty they do not. There is a recorded lecture, a week of slides narrated on Panopto or Kaltura, and an exam that has to be in Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace or Moodle by Friday. Formatting is the last ten minutes of that job. Writing forty good questions with believable wrong answers is the rest of the evening.
VidQuiz does the writing. It reads the material, drafts the multiple choice, true or false and short answer items, lets you edit every line, and exports a file in the Respondus standard format with sequential numbers, starred keys and the explanation for each question already set as feedback. You open Respondus, press Import Questions, and publish the way you always have.

| Route | What you start with | What you still have to do | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typing it in Word by hand | A blank document and the campus formatting guide | Write every question and wrong answer, number and letter them manually, star each key, save as .txt, .rtf or .docx | No software cost. Quick for ten questions, slow and error prone for forty |
| Reformatting an old exam | A Word or PDF exam you already wrote | Strip auto numbering, retype letters, add asterisks or an Answers: list at the end, fix whatever the preview rejects | No software cost. Only works when the questions exist |
| Respondus Test Bank Network | A participating publisher textbook you have adopted | Request access, which one college notes can take several days, then pick questions from the bank | Free to instructors who adopt a participating textbook, per Respondus |
| A general AI chatbot | A prompt and pasted text | Check every number, letter and asterisk, since a chatbot does not run the Respondus preview | Whatever your chatbot subscription costs |
| VidQuiz | A YouTube link, a recording with its transcript, or up to 60,000 characters of notes | Review and edit the draft, then press Respondus on the export bar | A one-time demo of three quizzes, then plans from $49 a month or $24 a month billed annually |
Respondus 4.0 itself is licensed separately, campus-wide from $1,695 a year by student FTE or as a single-user license, and it runs on Windows only. The table covers how the question file gets made, not the license.
How do I import questions into Respondus 4.0?
Through the Import Questions button on the Start tab. Open Respondus, choose the personality for your learning system if it asks, and press Import Questions. Set Type of File to Plain Text, browse to the .txt file VidQuiz exported, keep the default option to create a new document and give it the name students will see in the course. Choose Exam, press Preview, and Respondus shows the first questions it parsed along with any errors.
If the preview is clean, press Finish and Respondus opens the Edit tab with every question in place. From there the usual Preview and Publish tab sends the exam to Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace or Moodle, and a campus-wide license can batch publish the same exam to several courses at once.
- Start tab, then Import Questions
- Type of File set to Plain Text
- Name the new document and choose Exam
- Preview, read any errors, then Finish
- Publish from the Preview and Publish tab
Respondus question format example
Below are three questions exactly as the VidQuiz export writes them: a multiple choice item, a true or false item and a short answer item sent as an essay. Each block starts with its number, the feedback lines sit above the choices, and the asterisk touches the correct letter with no space. A blank line separates one question from the next.
The ~ line is what Respondus shows a student who answered correctly and the @ line is what it shows one who did not. VidQuiz writes the same explanation in both, followed by the minute in the recording the question came from, so a student who missed it knows exactly where to rewatch.
1) What does the hidden layer of a neural network learn?
~ It learns intermediate features of the input. Covered at 04:12 in the source recording.

a) The raw pixel values
*b) Intermediate features of the input
c) The final class label
d) The learning rate
2) A network with more layers always trains faster.
~ Deeper networks usually take longer to train. Covered at 09:30 in the source recording.

Why is my Respondus import not working?
Word auto numbering is the most common cause. When Word numbers a list for you, the number is formatting rather than text, so Respondus sees a question with no number and the asterisk lands in the wrong place. Every campus guide says the same thing: turn off automatic numbering and lettering and type them yourself, or use the Answers: list at the end of the file instead of asterisks.
Next come gaps in the numbering, a space between the asterisk and the letter, and True and False in the wrong order. The quiet failure is an unmarked question, because Respondus then treats choice A as correct and only mentions it in the preview window, which is easy to click past at eleven at night. A generated file avoids all of these because nothing in it was typed by hand.
- Turn off Word auto numbering and lettering
- Keep the numbers sequential with no gaps
- No space between the asterisk and the letter
- Put True before False
- Read the preview warnings before pressing Finish
Can Respondus import questions from a Word document?
Yes. Respondus 4.0 imports Microsoft Word, rich text, plain text, QTI and tab or comma delimited files, and Word keeps images and formatting such as subscripts intact. The format rules are the same in every case, which is why the guides warn so much about Word: it is the file type most likely to add hidden numbering and smart formatting that the importer reads differently from what you see.
VidQuiz exports plain text because it is the one file type with nothing hidden in it. If you want to add an image or an equation to a question, import the .txt, then add it in the Respondus editor, or open the file in Word, save it as .docx and import that.
Does Respondus 4.0 work with Canvas New Quizzes?
Yes, with a recent version. The University of Missouri System notes that Respondus 4 version 4.1.0.02 or later publishes to Canvas New Quizzes as well as Classic Quizzes, and the Publish Wizard asks which of the two you want. Older guidance from several universities says otherwise because it predates that update, so check Help, Check for Update before assuming New Quizzes is off the table.
Retrieving questions back out of Canvas into Respondus is a separate matter, and campus pages still disagree on it. If the question set has to live outside Respondus as well, the same VidQuiz quiz also exports a QTI 1.2 package that Canvas imports directly.
Is there a Respondus 4.0 for Mac?
No. Respondus 4.0 is a Windows application, and the campus pages that distribute it say so plainly. Mac users either run it in a Windows virtual machine or a campus computer lab, or skip it and import into the learning system directly.
The second route is where VidQuiz is useful on its own. The quiz is written in the browser, and the same question set exports as QTI 1.2 for Canvas and Brightspace, GIFT and Aiken for Moodle, and a tab delimited file for Blackboard, so a Mac user never needs Respondus to get questions into a course. Our page on the Respondus 4.0 alternative covers that route in detail.
Can a Respondus test maker write the questions for me?
Respondus 4.0 cannot. It is an authoring and publishing tool: it holds, edits, prints and publishes questions you supply, from your own file or a publisher test bank. VidQuiz is the step before it. Paste a YouTube link and it reads the video directly. For a Panopto, Kaltura, Zoom or Teams recording, paste the transcript the platform already produced next to the link. Or paste up to 60,000 characters of lecture notes on their own.
You choose up to 30 questions per quiz and the difficulty. Each multiple choice item comes with three wrong answers written to be plausible, the correct answer marked, an explanation and a timestamp. It is a draft for an instructor to check, and every stem, choice and answer is editable before you export. The demo runs the real generator on your own material before you pay anything.

Respondus formatting rules and what the VidQuiz export does about each
Swipe left to see all columns →
| Rule in the Respondus standard format | What breaks if you miss it | What VidQuiz writes |
|---|---|---|
| Questions are numbered in sequence, with a ) or . and a space | A skipped number stops the import, according to several campus guides | 1) to 30) counted over the questions actually written, so a removed item never leaves a gap |
| Choices start with a letter, ) or . and a space | A choice without its letter is read as part of the question | a) to j) on every choice |
| The asterisk sits directly before the correct letter, no space | Without it Respondus marks choice A as correct and only warns you in the preview | *b) style keys on every multiple choice and true or false item |
| True must come before False | A False first pair imports as multiple choice | The true label is always written as a), in the language of the quiz |
| Feedback lines start with ~ for correct and @ for incorrect, before the choices | Feedback placed after the choices is attached to the wrong part of the question | The explanation and its timestamp on one ~ line and one @ line, above the choices |
| Essay items open with a Type: E line | Without it the item is read as multiple choice with one choice | Short answer items go out as Type: E with your answer as the model answer |
| One question per block, no hard returns inside a stem | A line break inside a stem can be read as a new line of markup | Every stem, choice and feedback line is folded onto a single line |
Rules read from the Respondus 4.0 formatting guides published by Southern Illinois University, the University of Michigan, Lansing Community College and SIU Edwardsville in October 2026. Respondus documents the same rules in the program under Import Questions, Help, The Standard Format for Importing Documents.

Why VidQuiz
What you get with respondus question format generator
Writes the questions, then the file
A formatting guide cannot write an exam. VidQuiz reads a YouTube link, a lecture recording with its transcript, or notes you paste, and drafts the items before a single Respondus line is written.
Built to the Respondus standard format
Sequential numbers with no gaps, lowercase lettered choices, the asterisk touching the correct letter, True before False, and Type: E on essay items, exactly as the campus guides describe.
Feedback travels with every question
Each explanation is written as both ~ and @ feedback, with the moment in the recording it came from, so students see why an answer is right after the exam closes.
What you can do
Everything respondus question format generator for respondus 4.0 gives you
Paste a YouTube link and VidQuiz reads the video itself; for anything else, upload it with its transcript. Either way it writes the questions and you edit anything before you share. You stay in control of the final quiz.
- Build a graded exam from last week's recorded lectures
- Skip the Word auto numbering trap that breaks Respondus imports
- Get three plausible wrong answers on every multiple choice item
