Those figures were read from the vendor pricing page on 4 September 2026 and are quoted in USD excluding VAT and taxes. The part the comparison directories leave out is what happens after you pick a tier, because for anyone whose reason for upgrading is bulk quiz work, the license is not the whole bill.

Read that last row twice, because it is the one detail on the page that does not follow the pattern. The annual Agency plan says unlimited sites. The lifetime Agency plan says up to fifty. If you run a network of client sites and you were budgeting the lifetime license precisely because the annual one is unlimited, the ceiling arrives with the one time payment.

Is Tutor LMS free?

Yes, genuinely. Tutor LMS core is free forever and it is not a crippled demo: unlimited courses, unlimited learners, unlimited instructors, native video plus YouTube and Vimeo support, a course builder, assignments, basic certificates and basic reporting all sit in the free plugin. Plenty of small course sites never pay Themeum anything.

What the free tier gives you on quizzes is what the pricing page calls the basic quiz builder, plus unlimited quizzes. What it does not give you is the advanced quiz builder, the five interactive question types, question preview inside the builder, detailed quiz reports, or quiz export and import. If the reason you are reading a pricing page is that you have fifty questions to load and no appetite for typing them, every one of those is on the paid side.

How much does Tutor LMS Pro cost per year?

$199, $399 or $799, and for most single site buyers the answer is $199. The three tiers are not three products. The feature list is identical across all of them and the only variable is how many sites the license activates on, which makes the decision unusually simple: count your sites, pick the tier that covers them, ignore the rest of the comparison table.

The lifetime option is worth doing arithmetic on rather than feeling clever about. At $499 against $199 a year, the Individual lifetime license pays for itself in year three. At $999 against $399, the Business lifetime license pays for itself in the same place. That is a reasonable bet on a mature plugin, and Tutor LMS is mature. It is a worse bet if you are still deciding whether WordPress is the right home for your courses at all.

What does a quiz ready Tutor LMS license actually cost?

This is the number nobody publishes, and it is the one that matters if quizzes are why you are upgrading. Three separate line items stack.

So a single site owner who wants to bulk load quizzes from a spreadsheet is looking at roughly $298 in the first year before hosting, and $99 of that recurs separately from the Tutor renewal. That is fair value if you genuinely have a large question bank to load repeatedly. It is a lot of money if what you needed was ten questions at the end of a lesson, and it is worth knowing before the second checkout page rather than after it.

Do I need the third party plugin, or is the built in import enough?

Often the built in one is enough, and the write ups that say otherwise are out of date. The Quiz Export/Import addon that ships with Pro reads CSV, and Themeum publishes a downloadable sample file along with a full property reference: the quiz settings row, the question row and the answer row, every column named. Its documentation was last updated in May 2026 and the column list is right there on the page.

The file is row keyed, which is the part that trips people up. Each line carries a Row Type of question or answer, sitting under a quiz settings row, and the question type has to be one of eight documented codes: true_false, single_choice, fill_in_the_blank, matching, short_answer, image_answering, open_ended and ordering. Nothing outside that list has an import path, including all five of the interactive types the pricing page sells you.

Buy the third party plugin when your source really is an XLSX workbook, a Word document or a Google Sheet that other people keep editing, because scheduled Google Sheet syncing is a genuine capability the built in route has no answer to. Skip it when you can produce a CSV in Tutor's shape, because at that point you are paying $99 a year for a file conversion. Does the Tutor LMS AI quiz generator cost extra?

Effectively yes, and the pricing page says so in small print that is easy to read past. Every paid tier lists AI Studio with the note that an OpenAI API key is required. You supply the key, you fund the balance, and Themeum's documentation notes that token use rises with the number of questions, the question types selected and the complexity of the topics.

That makes AI question generation a variable second bill rather than an included feature. For a handful of quizzes a month it is small. For a course library being built out over a quarter it is a line item somebody should own, and it arrives on a different invoice from the one with Tutor LMS on it.

The harder limit is not the money. AI Studio writes from course content you have already published inside Tutor, so it needs written lesson text to read. If your teaching exists as a recorded lecture, a webinar or a screen capture, which is how a large share of WordPress course sites actually deliver, there is nothing there for it to work from yet.

On sticker price Tutor LMS wins the entry tier by $60 and offers a lifetime route LearnDash does not. On feature gating Tutor LMS wins again, because it does not tier its features at all. Where LearnDash has the edge is ecosystem size and the depth of third party integrations, which is worth something if your site already runs a stack of WordPress plugins that name LearnDash as a supported target. The honest caveat on both is that the license is the smaller half of the cost of a self-hosted LMS. You own the server, the updates, the backups and the uptime. Once a course site is taking payments and holding learner records, that is a production application with production obligations. If you would rather not run WordPress at all, a hosted platform built to train and certify a whole workforce removes that entire category of work, and for teams whose license stack has already climbed past $300 the comparison is closer than it looks.

Where the questions come from before any of this matters

Every route above assumes the questions already exist as text. Buy Pro, buy the importer, fund the API key, and something still has to write fifty stems, two hundred plausible answer options and mark the key on every one. That is the work, and no pricing tier removes it.
