The short answer

Last updated August 2026

Most quiz platforms cap how many people can take a quiz and charge you to raise the cap. Kahoot 360 runs 50 participants on Pro Start up to 5,000 on Pro Ultra. Wayground business plans allow 150 participants, or 1,000 on Pro. Mentimeter allows 50 a month free and unlimited on paid plans. Slido runs 100 free to 5,000 on its top published tier. VidQuiz does not meter learners at all: it charges for videos converted, and a shared quiz link costs the same whether three people take it or three thousand.

Every quiz tool sells you the same thing twice. The first price is the licence for the person building the quiz. The second, quieter one is the cap on how many people are allowed to take it, and that is the number that decides what a platform really costs once a quiz reaches a whole department or a whole cohort.

This page collects the caps, read from each vendor's own pricing and help pages rather than from directory listings, which are frequently out of date. It also covers the part almost nobody publishes: what a "participant" means to each tool, because the same word is counted per session by one vendor, per month by another, and per attempt by a third.

Read first-party from each vendor in August 2026. Slido publishes its tiers in euros excluding VAT and Kahoot renders its school and personal tiers in the browsing country currency, so only figures each vendor states in US dollars are given here as dollars.

How is the number of participants counted?

It depends on the vendor, and the difference is worth more than the headline number. Slido counts devices that join cumulatively across a meeting, so a 100 cap means 100 total joins, not 100 at once. Mentimeter counts participants per month and resets. ProProfs counts unique people per month. ClassMarker counts each attempt. Kahoot and Wayground count who is in a session.

That changes the shopping maths completely. A trainer running the same 30 person module twelve times a year is one bill under a monthly unique count, twelve bills under a per attempt count, and a rounding error under a per session count. Before comparing sticker prices, work out which of those four clocks the vendor is running, because two tools with the same published cap can differ by an order of magnitude on the invoice.

How many participants can join a Kahoot for free?

Kahoot's classic ladder runs 40, 50, 100, 200 and 800 participants depending on tier, with the entry rung at 40. On the paid Kahoot! 360 business plans the ladder is 50 on Pro Start, 200 on Pro Standard, 1,000 on Pro Plus, 2,000 on Pro Max and 5,000 on Pro Ultra. Kahoot states the same limits apply to live and self paced sessions.

One licence covers one presenter or host. People joining with a game PIN do not need a licence of their own, which is why the participant cap rather than the seat count is the number that constrains a large session. Kahoot 360 business pricing is published in US dollars excluding VAT; the school and personal tiers render in the currency of the country you browse from, so no dollar figure for those is quoted here.

How many participants can Wayground (Quizizz) have?

Wayground is the current name for Quizizz. The free K-12 Basic plan is capped at 100 students and 20 saved activities, with no credit card required. Wayground for Business is a separate product: Essential allows 150 participants per session, and Pro raises that to 1,000 with a five seat minimum at $1,500 a year.

Two things are worth flagging. Wayground no longer publishes the 30 participant live-session cap that older comparison articles still quote, and several aggregators list Essential as $600 a year for five collaborators, which contradicts Wayground's own pages. The internally consistent figure from the vendor is $75 a month billed annually, which is $900 a year for up to three seats.

What is Mentimeter's participant limit?

Mentimeter caps its free plan at 50 participants a month, and that allowance resets monthly rather than applying per presentation. Paid plans remove the cap: Basic is $11.99 per presenter per month billed yearly and Pro is $24.99, both with unlimited participants, and Enterprise is quoted. Mentimeter publishes these figures in US dollars.

A monthly allowance behaves differently from a per session cap. Someone running one 200 person all-hands a quarter is over the free allowance in a single event, while someone running weekly 10 person retros stays inside it all year. The question to ask is not how big the biggest room is, but how many people pass through in a billing month.

What is Slido's participant limit?

Slido runs 100 participants on its free tier, 200 on Engage, 1,000 on Professional and 5,000 on the published Enterprise tier, with up to 20,000 per slido on the quoted large enterprise plan. Education plans start at up to 500 students. Slido counts the overall number of joined devices across a meeting, so the cap is cumulative rather than concurrent.

Two practical notes. Slido states that its pricing page requires JavaScript, which is why comparison articles so often disagree about what it costs, and it does not accept monthly payment: you buy either a one-time plan covering an event of up to seven days, or an annual plan. From a European connection Slido renders its tiers in euros excluding VAT, so no dollar conversion is published here.

Which quiz maker has no participant limit?

VidQuiz does not meter the people who take a quiz. A generated quiz becomes a shareable link that anyone opens in a browser without an account, and takers are never counted, never charged and never capped, on the free plan or any paid one. What VidQuiz bills for is the work of turning video into questions: the free plan covers 3 quizzes a month, Starter is $19 a month for 20 videos, Creator $39 for 100 and Team $99 for 400.

That structure suits a different shape of buyer. If your cost driver is a small team producing a lot of assessments for large or unpredictable audiences, per learner metering is the expensive model and per video is the cheap one. If you run occasional live sessions for a fixed room, a per session tool is likely the better fit, and the honest answer is that Kahoot and Wayground do live game play better than an exported quiz link does.

Why do quiz tools charge per participant?

Because it tracks the value the buyer gets rather than the cost the vendor carries. Serving a quiz to 5,000 people costs a vendor very little in compute; the reason the cap exists is that an organization able to reach 5,000 learners is an organization with a training budget. Participant tiers are the mechanism that turns one product into five prices.

It also creates the failure mode worth planning around: the cap binds at the least convenient moment, usually mid-session with people already in the room. Before committing, check whether the vendor blocks the extra joiners, silently drops them, or bills the overage, because those three behaviours are very different on the day, and the answer is rarely on the pricing page.

Why VidQuiz

What you get with participant limits

Learners are never metered

Share a quiz link and anyone takes it in the browser with no account. Takers are not counted against your plan on any tier.

Priced per video, not per person

Billing follows the videos you convert, so a quiz that reaches thirty people and one that reaches three thousand cost the same.

Figures read first-party

Every cap on this page comes from the vendor's own pricing or help pages, checked in August 2026, not from directory listings.

Good questions

Questions about participant limits

No. Learners who take a VidQuiz quiz are never metered, never charged and never need an account, on the free plan and every paid plan. The plan limits apply to how many videos you convert into quizzes, not to how many people answer them.
It depends on which clock the vendor runs. For a big audience taking one quiz, a per session tool like Kahoot or Wayground can be cheaper than a per taker tool like ProProfs. For many quizzes reaching unpredictable audiences, per video billing avoids the cap entirely.
Often yes. Kahoot states the same participant limits apply to live and self paced sessions, and ClassMarker charges a credit per test taken regardless of when it is taken. Check the wording carefully, because assuming a cap is live-only is a common and expensive mistake.
