The short answer
Last updated July 2026
A Canvas quiz generator writes the questions for a Canvas quiz so you do not type them into the New Quizzes editor one at a time. VidQuiz reads a lecture, course, or training video, drafts multiple choice questions with the correct answer marked and a one line explanation, and exports a QTI package that Canvas imports as a native quiz through Settings, Import Course Content, QTI .zip file. Every question keeps a timestamp back to the moment it tests, you edit anything before export, and questions come from your own video with no accuracy guarantee.
Canvas is where the quiz has to live, but Canvas does not write it for you. New Quizzes and Classic Quizzes both give you a clean editor and a blank bank, and populating that bank is the slow part: reading back through a recorded lecture, deciding what is testable, typing each stem, writing four options, marking the key, and doing it again twenty times. For a single weekly quiz across several sections, that is most of an afternoon.
VidQuiz does the drafting and hands Canvas a file it already understands. Paste the recorded lecture, the Canvas Studio video, the course module, or the recorded webinar, and it reads the spoken content and writes multiple choice questions with the answer marked and a short explanation of why it is right. Each question carries a timestamp chip pointing at the moment in the video it came from, which is useful when a student disputes an answer or asks where something was covered. When the set looks right, export a QTI package and import it into Canvas the same way you would import any question bank.
QTI is the neutral standard Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, Brightspace, and Sakai all read, so the same export drops into whichever LMS your institution runs. Questions are generated from your own video, every one is editable before you export, and there is no perfect accuracy guarantee, so review the set once before it counts for a grade.
At a glance
Building a Canvas quiz by hand versus from your video
| Step | By hand in New Quizzes | With VidQuiz |
|---|---|---|
| Writing the questions | Read the lecture back, type each item | Drafted from the video you paste |
| Marking the answer key | Set the correct option per question | Correct answer marked on every draft |
| Feedback on answers | Type feedback per choice, usually skipped | A one line explanation on every question |
| Getting it into Canvas | Already there, but you built it manually | Import a QTI .zip in a couple of clicks |
| Reusing across an LMS | Locked to how you built it | One QTI file works in Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard |
| Tracing a disputed question | Rewatch to find where it was covered | A timestamp chip on every question |
Canvas is strong at delivery, grading, and the gradebook. The gap this fills is the writing: producing the question bank before you import it.
How do I import a quiz into Canvas from VidQuiz?
Export your quiz as a QTI package, then in Canvas open Settings, choose Import Course Content, pick QTI .zip file as the content type, upload the file, and run the import. Canvas unpacks it into a question bank, and in most setups a quiz, that you can assign to any section.
If your course uses New Quizzes rather than Classic Quizzes, import the QTI package into a question bank first, then build a New Quiz and pull the items in from that bank. The extra step exists because New Quizzes and Classic Quizzes store banks differently, not because the file is wrong.
What is QTI and why does it matter for Canvas?
QTI, Question and Test Interoperability, is an open standard for moving quiz questions between systems. It is the reason a set of questions can leave one tool and become a native quiz in another instead of a flat document. Canvas reads QTI on import, which is what lets an outside generator populate a real Canvas quiz.
The practical payoff is that you are not locked in. Because Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle, Brightspace, and Sakai all speak QTI, a quiz you generate once imports into whichever LMS a department runs, and it survives a migration if your institution switches platforms.
Can Canvas generate quiz questions on its own?
Canvas has added AI assisted question features in New Quizzes, but they work from text and course material you already have inside Canvas, and availability depends on what your institution has enabled. If your source is a recorded lecture or a webinar, you still have to get that content into a form the feature can read.
VidQuiz starts from the video itself. You paste the recording, it reads the spoken content, and it writes the questions, so you skip the transcribe step entirely and get a QTI file ready to import. The two are not mutually exclusive: generate the draft from the video, then refine inside Canvas.
Will the imported questions keep their answers and feedback?
Yes. The QTI package carries the correct answer for each multiple choice item and the one line explanation as question feedback, so what you reviewed in VidQuiz is what lands in Canvas. Point values and settings like shuffle and time limits are set in Canvas after import, where they belong.
Because the answer key and feedback travel with the file, you are not rebuilding anything by hand after import. Review the set in VidQuiz once, export, import, and the quiz is ready to assign apart from the delivery settings Canvas controls.
What videos can it build a Canvas quiz from?
Anything with spoken content. Recorded lectures and lecture capture, Canvas Studio videos, online course modules, recorded webinars, conference talks, screen recordings and software walkthroughs, and direct MP4 files. If the material is in the audio, it can become a Canvas quiz.
Why VidQuiz
What you get with canvas quiz generator
QTI that Canvas imports natively
Export a QTI .zip and bring it into Canvas through Import Course Content. Questions land as a real Canvas quiz or question bank you can assign, not a PDF you retype, and the same file imports into Blackboard, Moodle, or Brightspace.
The questions are already written
Paste a lecture or course video and VidQuiz drafts the multiple choice items with answers and explanations. The New Quizzes editor stops being a blank page and becomes a set you review and adjust.
Timestamps for defensible grading
Every question keeps a chip pointing at the moment it tests. When a student challenges an item, you jump to the exact part of the recording it came from instead of hunting through an hour of video.
