Diffit costs $0 on the Basic plan and $14.99 a month or $149.99 a year for an individual Premium subscription. Diffit for Schools is a flat annual fee tiered by student enrollment, quoted on request and covering every staff member in the building. Basic lets you create and print resources and download them as PDF; the exports to Google Docs, Slides, Forms, Classroom, Word and PowerPoint are Premium only.

Everything below comes from Diffit's own pricing page, its individual teacher subscription page and its help center, read in October 2026. Several review sites quote a specific trial length for Diffit Premium; Diffit's own pages say only that new accounts get premium features "for a trial period", so we do not repeat a number we could not confirm.

The annual plan works out at about $12.50 a month. Diffit puts the saving at $29 a year, or 16 percent against twelve monthly payments of $14.99.

Is Diffit free for teachers?

Yes. Diffit Basic is free with no end date, and Diffit says plainly that the free version remains available. On Basic you can create resources for any topic or text, edit and adapt them, print them, download them as PDF and share them with colleagues. Two things are missing: the exports to Google and Microsoft tools, and anything you made more than 90 days ago.

The 90-day limit is the one teachers notice in their second year. A unit you built last fall is gone from Basic by the time you teach it again, unless you saved the PDF yourself. Premium keeps the full history.

New Diffit accounts start with premium features turned on. According to the Diffit help center, when that trial ends you are not charged, and the account rolls over to Basic automatically. Anything you exported to Google Docs or Forms during the trial stays where you put it; the ability to export again goes away.

How much is Diffit Premium?

Diffit Premium for one teacher is $14.99 a month or $149.99 a year. Diffit lists what it adds over Basic as five things:

  • Export to Google Docs, Slides, Forms, Classroom, or Microsoft Word and PowerPoint.
  • Alignment to standards, skills, curricula and MTSS tiers.
  • Editing, refreshing and reusing every resource you have ever made.
  • Ready-made graphic organizers such as CER and Cornell Notes.
  • Advanced customization tools.

The buying rules are stricter than most teacher tools. Diffit says an individual plan can only be bought with a credit card from the teacher's own Diffit account. A school cannot pay for it with a purchase order, and a school cannot buy individual plans for several teachers at once. The subscription is also tied to the email it was bought with and cannot be moved to another address, so buy it on the account you will actually use.

How much does Diffit cost for a school?

Diffit does not publish the figure. Diffit for Schools is described as a flat-rate annual subscription, tiered by student enrollment, that gives every staff member at the school all premium features. You request pricing for your school on the Diffit site, or a quote for a district. Purchase orders and checks are accepted for school and district licenses, which is the route most US districts need.

Diffit's own advice is worth taking at face value: it says its schoolwide license ends up costing about the same as buying individual plans for more than a handful of teachers. If four or five teachers in one building want Premium, ask for the school price before anyone puts $149.99 on a personal card. A school license also adds an admin dashboard, free professional development and dedicated support.

What is the difference between Diffit Basic and Premium?

What you needBasicPremium
Leveled reading passages, vocabulary and questions from a topic, text or transcriptYesYes
Download as PDF and printYesYes
Export to Google Forms or Google ClassroomNoYes
Export to Google Docs, Slides, Word or PowerPointNoYes
Standards, skills and MTSS tier alignmentNoYes
Resources older than 90 daysNoYes
QTI, Moodle or Blackboard quiz fileNoNo

The last row is the one that matters if your grades live in an LMS. Diffit's help article on export options lists Google Slides, Google Docs, Google Forms, Google Classroom, Word, PowerPoint, PDF and print. No plan includes a QTI package for Canvas or Brightspace, a GIFT file for Moodle or a Blackboard upload file.

Can Diffit make questions from a YouTube video?

Yes, on any plan, but not from the link alone in the web app. Diffit recommends its Chrome extension: open the YouTube video, click the Diffit logo, choose Get Resources, and Diffit transcribes the video and asks for a prompt. Without the extension, Diffit's instructions are to open the transcript on YouTube, copy it and paste it into Diffit. Either route gives you a leveled reading passage with questions, not a timed quiz tied to the video.

Is Diffit Premium worth it?

For a teacher who differentiates every week, it is one of the better value tools in the category. $149.99 a year buys leveled readings at any grade level, translation, standards alignment and one-click export into the Google or Microsoft tools a class already uses. If that describes most of your prep, buy it, or ask your school for the site license.

It is a weaker buy if what you mostly need is graded quizzes in an LMS. Premium's Google Forms export gives you a form, not a Canvas or Moodle quiz, and moving those questions into a question bank is still manual. That is the job VidQuiz does. Paste a YouTube link and it reads the video itself, writes multiple choice questions with the correct answer, an explanation and a timestamp for each, and exports a QTI 1.2 zip for Canvas and Brightspace, a GIFT file for Moodle, a Blackboard tab-delimited file, a Google Forms CSV or a PDF with the answer key. It costs more than Diffit Premium, $49 a month or $288 for a year on Starter, and it does not write leveled readings at all. The Diffit alternative comparison sets the two side by side, including the rows where Diffit wins.

If your source is a textbook chapter or a handout rather than a video, and the goal is still a graded check, you can turn the PDF itself into a quiz instead of leveling it first.

How to choose without overpaying

  • Check for a school license first. If a few colleagues already use Diffit, the schoolwide price may cover all of you for about what four or five individual plans cost, and it can go on a purchase order.
  • Pick annual only if you teach through summer. Diffit suggests monthly subscribers cancel for the summer and resubscribe in the fall, and says resources are kept. Ten months at $14.99 is $149.90, almost exactly the annual price.
  • Export before a trial ends. Premium exports stop when the account rolls back to Basic, so move anything you need into Google Docs or Forms while you still can.
  • Start from where the grade lives. If quizzes run in Google Forms, Diffit Premium covers you. If they have to sit in a Canvas question bank, read how the Canvas quiz generator packages QTI before you pay for either tool.
  • Match the tool to the source. For a recorded lesson, the YouTube video to quiz workflow ties every question to a moment in the video, which settles a disputed answer quickly.
