The short answer
Last updated July 2026
A Panopto quiz generator turns a Panopto recording into a set of ready-made questions instead of making you type each one into the timeline editor. Paste or upload the recording, and VidQuiz reads the lecture and writes multiple-choice questions with the answer marked, an explanation, and a timestamp. From there you either paste the questions into a Panopto in-video quiz, or export a QTI package that imports into Canvas as a gradable quiz. The point is speed: the questions are written for you and stay fully editable before anything reaches a student.
A Panopto quiz generator does the slow part of Panopto quizzing for you: writing the questions. Panopto lets you place a quiz on the video timeline, but you still type every question, option, and correct answer by hand. Paste or upload the recording into VidQuiz instead and it reads the spoken content, then writes multiple-choice questions with the correct answer marked, a short explanation, and a timestamp back to the moment each one tests.
Use the draft two ways. Drop the questions into a Panopto in-video quiz so viewers answer as they watch, or export a QTI package that imports straight into your Canvas course as a gradable quiz. Either way the writing is done in minutes, every question stays editable, and the questions come from your own lecture rather than a generic bank.
At a glance
Panopto native quizzing vs generating the questions first
| Panopto in-video quiz | VidQuiz then Panopto or Canvas | |
|---|---|---|
| Who writes the questions | You type each one by hand | Generated from the recording, you edit |
| Question types | Multiple choice, true/false, multi-select, fill-in-the-blank | Multiple choice with answers and explanations |
| Where it plays | Inside the Panopto player | A share link, or inside Panopto, or in Canvas |
| Canvas grading | One rolled-up score, no per-question breakdown | Per-question data when imported as a QTI quiz |
| Time to build | As long as it takes to write every item | Minutes, then a quick review pass |
Panopto reports a single quiz score to the Canvas gradebook and does not break it down by question; a QTI import into Canvas keeps each question separate.
How do you add a quiz to a Panopto video?
In Panopto you open the recording in the editor, add a quiz at the point on the timeline where you want it, and type each question with its options and correct answer. Panopto supports multiple choice, true/false, multi-select, and fill-in-the-blank, and you can place more than one quiz across a single video. Viewers then answer inside the player as they watch.
The mechanics are simple; the time cost is the writing. For a forty minute lecture, hand-writing two or three questions per section is the part that stops most recordings from ever getting a quiz. VidQuiz removes that step by drafting the questions from the recording, so all you do in Panopto is paste and place them.
How do Panopto quiz results report to the Canvas gradebook?
Panopto can pass an in-video quiz score to the Canvas gradebook when the video is set up as a Canvas assignment and students open it from the assignment link. The score reports back within a few hours, but with real limits: it is a single rolled-up number, it is not broken down by question, and multiple quizzes in one video collapse into one grade. Students who watch the recording anywhere other than the assignment link are not recorded.
If you need per-question results, a cleaner path is to generate the questions with VidQuiz and export a QTI package into Canvas. That imports as a native Canvas quiz where each question is graded and reviewable on its own, and it uses Canvas quizzing rather than Panopto reporting. Pick the in-video route for a light comprehension check, and the QTI route when the score has to hold up as a graded assessment.
What question types does a Panopto quiz support?
Panopto in-video quizzes support multiple choice, true/false, multi-select, and fill-in-the-blank, with multiple choice as the default. VidQuiz writes multiple-choice questions, four options with the correct one marked, plus a short explanation for each, which map directly onto Panopto multiple-choice items and onto a Canvas quiz when you export.
Because the draft is editable, you can rewrite an item as true/false or trim options before you place it. The generator gives you a complete first set from the lecture; you decide the exact wording and format each question ends up in.
Can you generate Panopto quiz questions automatically?
Yes. Panopto does not write questions for you, but you can generate them from the same recording and bring them in. Download or share the Panopto recording, paste the link or upload the file into VidQuiz, and it returns a full multiple-choice set drawn from the spoken content in seconds. Review and edit, then either paste the questions into a Panopto in-video quiz or export to Canvas, Google Forms, PDF, or CSV.
The questions are a strong first draft from your own lecture, not a guarantee, so review anything that counts toward a grade before it goes out. What you save is the hour of typing, which is the reason so many recordings never get a quiz in the first place.
