The short answer

A nursing quiz generator drafts exam questions from teaching material so faculty do not start from a blank page. VidQuiz works from video: paste a YouTube link to a lecture or skills demonstration, or paste a transcript, and it writes single best answer multiple choice items with a rationale and a timestamp for each. It does not write Select All That Apply or Next Generation NCLEX case study items. Plans start at $49 a month for 40 quizzes, and questions export to Canvas, Blackboard, Brightspace, Moodle or Google Forms.

Most nursing quiz generators are built for students cramming from their own notes. This one is built for the person writing the exam. Paste the YouTube link to a recorded lecture, a skills demonstration or a unit in-service, and VidQuiz drafts multiple choice questions with the correct answer marked, a written rationale, and a timestamp back to the moment in the video each item came from.

For recordings that live in Panopto, Kaltura, Canvas Studio or a hospital learning system, paste the transcript instead, up to 60,000 characters, because VidQuiz has no speech to text of its own. Edit every item before it counts, then export a QTI 1.2 package for Canvas or Brightspace, a tab delimited file for Blackboard, a GIFT file for Moodle, a Google Forms ready CSV, a plain CSV or a PDF.

Item type VidQuiz drafts it? What to do instead
Multiple choice, single best answer Yes, with the key marked and a rationale Review the distractors against your course content
True or false Yes Not an NCLEX item type, useful for a quick unit check
Select All That Apply (multiple response) No Write by hand, or convert a strong single answer item after generation
Bow tie No Write by hand in your testing platform
Matrix / grid No Write by hand in your testing platform
Drop-down cloze, drag and drop, highlight No Write by hand in your testing platform
Unfolding case study (six clinical judgment steps) No Use a dedicated NGN item bank or your program testing vendor

The Next Generation NCLEX went live on 1 April 2023 and added case based item types built around the NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model. VidQuiz does not produce those formats and does not claim to. It is the fast way to get the recall and application layer of an exam drafted from the teaching you already recorded, so faculty time goes into the case studies.

Can AI write nursing exam questions?

Yes, as a first draft, and the published research agrees on the caveat. Studies comparing ChatGPT written items with educator written ones in nursing programs found the AI drafts rated close on quality once faculty refined them, and weaker on higher order and multiple response items. That matches what you will see here: fast, usable recall and application questions, and a need for a nurse educator to read every one before it counts toward a grade.

The saving is real because item writing is the slow part of the job. ATI reported that half of the 300 nurse educators it surveyed across 44 states did not feel confident writing NCLEX style items. A generator does not replace that judgment. It removes the blank page, so the judgment goes into fixing a draft rather than inventing twenty stems from scratch.

Can it write NCLEX style questions?

It writes the classic NCLEX style multiple choice item: a clinical stem, four options, one best answer, and a rationale explaining why the key is right. Those still make up much of a unit exam in most prelicensure programs. It does not write Select All That Apply, bow tie, matrix, cloze or unfolding case study items, and the table above lists each one so nobody finds out after buying.

A useful habit with the drafts: ask whether each stem tests a nursing action or only a fact. Rewrite the fact recall ones into "which action should the nurse take first" form where the lecture supports it. The timestamp on each item takes you straight to the part of the recording it came from, which makes checking the key a thirty second job instead of a rewatch.

How do I turn a nursing lecture or skills video into a quiz?

Paste the link if the video is on YouTube, public or unlisted, and VidQuiz reads it directly. For a recording in Panopto, Kaltura, Canvas Studio, Zoom or a hospital learning system, download the transcript those platforms already produce and paste it into the transcript box, up to 60,000 characters. Pick how many questions you want and which types, then generate.

Skills videos work well because the steps are sequential and observable, so questions about order, safety checks and rationale fall straight out of the narration. A ten minute Foley catheter insertion or medication administration demo usually yields a solid set of eight to twelve items. Long didactic lectures work too; for a two hour recording use the Creator plan, which allows videos up to 120 minutes.

  • Paste a YouTube link, or paste the transcript for any other source.
  • Choose the question count and types.
  • Read every item, edit stems and distractors, delete anything off syllabus.
  • Export to your LMS or share a link for an ungraded check.

How do I get the questions into Canvas, Blackboard or Brightspace?

Pick the export that matches your LMS and import it into the question bank screen. Canvas and Brightspace read the QTI 1.2 package. Blackboard takes the tab delimited upload file, because Anthology documents its own QTI importer as QTI 2.1 only. Moodle reads GIFT. So every major platform a US nursing program runs on has a native route. Import into a bank rather than straight into an exam, so faculty can pull items into several exams across the semester.

Run one small quiz through the full path first: generate, import, preview as a student, then submit a test attempt. It takes five minutes and catches the only real surprise, which is whether your LMS places the import into a new bank or asks you to choose one.

How much does a nursing quiz generator cost?

VidQuiz starts at $49 a month for 40 quizzes with videos up to 60 minutes, $99 a month for 150 quizzes and videos up to 120 minutes, and $199 a month for 600 quizzes. Paying yearly halves the price. There is a free demo of three quizzes, granted once, so you can test it on one of your own recordings first. Nothing is priced per student, so a quiz taken by a cohort of 120 costs the same as one taken by 12.

For comparison, the student tools in this category run from free promotions to small weekly subscriptions, and the program level assessment platforms are sold under institutional contracts with no public price. The right comparison for a faculty member is the hours: a 30 item unit exam written by hand is an afternoon, and a reviewed draft from a recording is closer to half an hour.

Is it safe to use AI generated questions in a nursing course?

It is safe when a qualified nurse educator reviews every item before it is used for a grade, and that review is not optional. A generated question can be clinically out of date, can have two defensible answers, or can test something your course deliberately teaches differently. Check dosages, lab ranges and priority actions against your current course materials and the textbook your program has adopted.

Two practical rules keep it clean. Never paste protected health information into a transcript: skills videos and lectures should use simulated patients, and case details should be de-identified. And keep the item bank, not the generator, as the record of what was tested, so an exam can be reviewed or challenged later from the LMS itself.

Who uses a nursing quiz generator like this?

Three groups get the most out of it. Prelicensure faculty who record lectures and want a unit quiz drafted from each one. Hospital clinical educators and staff development teams who run annual competencies and in-services and need a short knowledge check after every recorded session. And continuing education providers who need a post test for each recorded module.

What they share is a library of recordings and no time to write items from them. If your program already licenses a full testing platform for high stakes exams, VidQuiz sits alongside it for the weekly quizzes and in-service checks that platform was never set up to cover.

Where the others win: the student tools write Select All That Apply and prioritization items, which VidQuiz does not, and NursingEdAI generates without a monthly cap and exports to ExamSoft. Where VidQuiz wins: it starts from the lecture or skills video itself and hands the finished questions to the LMS your program already grades in.
