Gimkit import template, Gimkit AI kit generator and CSV kit import from a video lesson
Gimkit builds a kit from a five column CSV, the question, one correct answer and three incorrect ones. VidQuiz writes those rows from your lesson video, so the kit is ready to upload instead of ready to type.
What you are looking at
Three quizzes VidQuiz generated from three real YouTube videos. They are saved output, not generated in your browser. Pick one to answer it, and open the source video to check the questions against what is actually said in it.
For your own video, the live demo on the home page runs the real generator once, free, with no account.
This box only holds saved quizzes.
It has not sent your link anywhere. The live demo on the home page does run it: one real generation, free, no account and no card, on the same engine paying customers use.
What VidQuiz reads: paste a YouTube link and VidQuiz watches the video itself. For any other source (Vimeo, an MP4, a screen recording, an upload) paste that video’s transcript and VidQuiz writes the questions from it.

The short answer
Gimkit imports a kit from a CSV file built on one of its two templates. Template 1 has the columns Question, Correct Answer, Incorrect Answer 1, Incorrect Answer 2 and Incorrect Answer 3 under a title row. Template 2 has only Question and Correct Answer. In the kit editor choose Import from Spreadsheet, pick the template, fill it, download it as .csv and click Upload File. VidQuiz drafts those rows from a YouTube lesson or a transcript, with the correct answer written out as text, which is exactly what the Correct Answer column wants.
Gimkit is the rare classroom game with a spreadsheet import that anyone can understand at a glance. Five columns, one row per question, the right answer in the second column and up to three wrong answers after it. Save it as CSV, upload it in the kit editor, and the kit appears on your dashboard.
The template is not the slow part. The slow part is writing forty good questions and, harder, thirty good wrong answers per ten questions, the plausible distractors that make a game worth playing rather than a guessing contest. That is the work a teacher does on a Sunday night.
Gimkit added its own answer to that in August 2025, a Generate with AI button in the kit editor that writes 10 to 30 questions from a prompt and a grade level. It is quick and it is included. It also writes from what you type into the prompt, not from the lesson you actually taught, so a kit built for a specific video or lecture still starts with you describing that lesson to a chatbot.
This page covers both routes as Gimkit documents them in September 2026: the exact template format, the one mistake behind most failed uploads, what the built in AI can and cannot do, and how a question set drafted from your own lesson video moves into Template 1 with a single spreadsheet formula.

| Route | What it reads | Cost | The limit that matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Add a Question, by hand | Nothing. You type the question, the correct answer and each wrong answer | $0 on Gimkit Basic | Time. Image uploads and audio questions need a paid plan |
| Import from Spreadsheet, Template 1 | A CSV with Question, Correct Answer and Incorrect Answer 1 to 3 | $0, no plan requirement in the import article | Columns must stay in place. Wrong columns are the most common failure |
| Import from Spreadsheet, Template 2 | A CSV with Question and Correct Answer only | $0 | You supply no wrong answers, so it suits term and definition sets |
| Flashcard set import | Term and definition pairs separated by a tab, pasted into a text box | $0 | Pairs only. Works with the Copy Text export of other flashcard sites |
| Generate with AI | A prompt you type, plus a grade level from Pre-K to University | Built into the kit editor | 10 to 30 questions per run, written from the prompt rather than your lesson |
| QuestionWell | A topic, a pasted reading, a website link or a YouTube video | $70 a year for one teacher. The no cost tier caps video quizzes at five each month | Pushes questions straight into Gimkit and more than twenty other platforms |
| VidQuiz | A public YouTube link, or the transcript of any other recording | Free demo of 3 quizzes, then plans from $49 a month | Up to 30 questions per quiz, exported as a CSV you move into Template 1 |
Import steps and template choice from the Gimkit help center article on creating a kit with a CSV file, and the column headers from the template files it links. Flashcard import from the Gimkit help center article on importing flashcard sets. QuestionWell plan details from its own pricing and features pages, as covered on our QuestionWell alternative page. Generate with AI launch date and the 10 to 30 question range from the Gimkit community wiki, since Gimkit's help center does not yet document it. Read September 2026.
How do I import questions into Gimkit?
Click New Kit on your dashboard and enter the kit name, language and subject. In the kit editor choose Import from Spreadsheet in the left panel, select the template you want, make a copy, fill it in, then download it as a .csv file. Back on the upload page click Upload File and pick the CSV. Gimkit sends you to your dashboard with the new kit on it.
Open the kit and read it once before you host it. The import does what the file says, so a correct answer that landed in the wrong column shows up as a question where every student is marked wrong. It is quicker to catch that in the editor than in the middle of a live game.
If Google Sheets is blocked on your school account, Gimkit links a Dropbox folder with both templates as .csv and Excel files. Fill either one in Excel and save it as CSV.
What is the Gimkit spreadsheet import template format?
Template 1 has a title row, then a header row with five columns: Question, Correct Answer, Incorrect Answer 1, Incorrect Answer 2 and Incorrect Answer 3. Each row after that is one multiple choice question with the correct answer written out and up to three wrong answers beside it.
Template 2 has the same title row and only two columns, Question and Correct Answer. Pick it when you have a term and its definition, or a question with one short answer, and no wrong answers written. Gimkit's own guidance is to use Template 1 when you want to control the wrong answers yourself.
Gimkit's help center names one cause behind most failed uploads: content in the wrong columns. Do not move, rename or add columns, and keep the title row. If your source file has more columns than the template, copy the ones you need into the template rather than uploading your own file.
Can you use AI to make a Gimkit?
Yes. Since August 22, 2025 the kit editor has a Generate with AI option. You type a prompt describing the questions you want, choose a grade level from Pre-K to University, and it returns between 10 and 30 questions. You can add all of them, add them one at a time or regenerate with a new prompt, and AI written questions carry a small icon until you edit them.
It writes from the prompt. If you ask for twenty questions on photosynthesis for 7th grade, you get twenty reasonable questions on photosynthesis, which is exactly right for a general review. It is less right for a kit that is meant to check whether students watched and understood one particular lesson, because it has never seen that lesson.
If your review game follows a video, draft the questions from the video and import them. If it follows a topic, the built in button is free and quick, and you should use it.
Can Gimkit make a kit from a YouTube video?
Not directly. The kit editor offers typed questions, the spreadsheet import, flashcard text, the Question Bank of public kits and Generate with AI, and none of those reads a video link. The nearest workaround is describing the video in the AI prompt yourself, which gets you questions about the topic rather than about what the lesson actually said.
That is the gap VidQuiz fills. Paste the public YouTube link and it reads the video, then drafts multiple choice questions with four options with the correct one marked, a one line explanation and a timestamp showing the moment each question came from. For a recording that is not on YouTube, paste its transcript instead, up to 60,000 characters.
The draft exports as CSV, and because our Correct Answer column holds the answer text rather than a letter, it maps straight onto Gimkit Template 1 with one formula for the wrong answers.
How many answers can a Gimkit question have?
Through the spreadsheet import, four: one correct answer and up to three incorrect ones in Template 1. In the kit editor itself you can add more answers and mark more than one as correct, and a text input question accepts up to four matching answers.
The four answer layout is the one to plan around if you import. A VidQuiz question normally has four options, which fits exactly. If a question came back with five or more, keep the three strongest wrong answers and drop the rest before you upload, because extra columns are exactly what breaks the import.
True or false questions fit too. Put True or False in Correct Answer and the other word in Incorrect Answer 1, and leave the last two columns empty.
Can I export a kit from Gimkit?
Yes, as text. Open the kit, click Export in the side panel and click Copy Text, then paste it wherever you need it. That gives you the question and answer content, not a file other platforms import as a quiz, and not anything Gimkit has no field for.
That makes the source file worth keeping. A kit you built from a spreadsheet already has its backup. A kit typed into the editor or generated there only leaves Gimkit as copied text.
Every VidQuiz question set stays in your account with its explanations and timestamps, and exports whenever you need it: CSV for the Gimkit template, a PDF with the answer key, QTI 1.2 for Canvas or Brightspace, GIFT for Moodle, a Google Forms file or a Blackboard upload.
How do I turn a video lesson into a Gimkit kit?
Paste the lesson's YouTube link into VidQuiz, or paste the transcript if the recording lives in your LMS, on Vimeo or on a school drive. Review the questions, edit anything you would phrase differently, and export the CSV.
Open a copy of Gimkit Template 1. Copy the Question column into Question and the Correct Answer column into Correct Answer, starting on row 3 under the headers. For the wrong answers, paste your Option A to Option D columns into four spare columns on the right, say H to K, with the correct answer in L. In C3 enter =FILTER(H3:K3, H3:K3<>L3). Google Sheets and Excel 365 spill the three options that are not the correct one across C3 to E3. Fill the formula down, copy C to E, paste them back as values, and delete the helper columns.
Move any short answer rows to Template 2. Download as .csv, upload it through Import from Spreadsheet, and host the kit.

Why VidQuiz
What you get with gimkit kit
Questions drafted from the lesson itself
Paste the public YouTube link of a lesson, or the transcript of any other recording, and get the question, the options, the correct answer and a one line explanation, each tagged with the timestamp it came from so you can check it against the video.
Built for the five column template
Our CSV writes the correct answer as text, not a letter, so it drops straight into Gimkit's Correct Answer column. One FILTER formula pulls the other options into Incorrect Answer 1 to 3. Short answer rows go into Template 2 as they are.
A copy that lives outside Gimkit
Gimkit's own export is copied text. Keep the full question set, with explanations Gimkit has no column for, as a CSV, a PDF with the answer key, QTI 1.2, GIFT, a Google Forms file or a Blackboard upload for the next platform your school adopts.
