LearnPress quiz importer plugin for CSV and Excel question import

The free LearnPress migration tool reads only its own XML. Three paid importers do read a spreadsheet, from $11 to $75 once, and two of them take CSV. The part none of them does is write the questions.

The short answer

LearnPress has no spreadsheet import in the core plugin. The free LearnPress Backup and Migration Tool moves courses, quizzes and questions between sites, but it reads and writes XML only. To load questions from a spreadsheet you buy a third party importer: WP Plugins For You sells one for $75 that reads Excel, CSV and Google Sheets with up to 10 options per question, and Mamflow sells one listed at $39 (on sale at $11 when we checked) that reads CSV, JSON and XLSX. Both cover the four core question types: true or false, single choice, multiple choice and fill in the blanks. VidQuiz writes the questions those importers expect. Paste a public YouTube link or a transcript and get the stem, the options, the marked correct answer and an explanation, exported as a CSV that maps onto either template.

LearnPress is the WordPress LMS most people start on because the core really is free on WordPress.org, and it stays usable for a long time before you pay ThimPress anything. The first time it costs you real effort is usually quizzes. The quiz builder is fine for ten questions. It is slow for a fifty item final assessment, because every stem, every option and every correct answer gets typed into its own box.

So you look for an import button, and you find one in the wrong place. ThimPress publishes a free LearnPress Backup and Migration Tool that exports and imports courses, lessons, quizzes and questions. It even migrates from Tutor LMS and LearnDash. What it does not do is read a spreadsheet. It works in XML, the file it wrote itself, and a request to add Excel and CSV import has sat open on its GitHub tracker since March 2022.

Spreadsheet import is sold by third parties, and here LearnPress is kinder than its neighbours. On LifterLMS no importer reads CSV at all. On LearnPress two of the paid importers accept CSV directly, one of them accepts up to ten answer options per question, and the cheapest one costs less than a single ThimPress add-on.

Everything below was read from the ThimPress, LearnPress, WordPress.org, WP Plugins For You and Mamflow product and documentation pages. It covers what each route really accepts, what it costs, which question types exist and which add-on unlocks the rest, and the step no importer does for you: writing the questions in the first place.

Route What it accepts Cost on top of free LearnPress What it is actually for
Quiz builder, by hand Nothing. You type every stem, option and key $0 for the four core question types A few questions written directly inside WordPress
LearnPress Backup and Migration Tool XML written by the tool itself, plus migration from Tutor LMS and LearnDash $0, free on WordPress.org Moving a whole course, quizzes included, between sites or off another WordPress LMS
WP Plugins For You, Excel to LearnPress quiz importer Excel, CSV and a linked Google Sheet $75 for a single site Bulk loading questions with up to 10 options, and assigning one quiz to several courses from the file
Mamflow, Quiz Importer for LearnPress CSV, JSON and XLSX $39 list, $11 on sale when checked, one time payment The cheapest spreadsheet route, built for LearnPress 4.x
WP Sheet Editor, Courses edition CSV, with column mapping and update or create modes Paid, price not stated on its LearnPress guide Editing many existing quizzes as rows of a spreadsheet, not only importing new ones
VidQuiz A public YouTube link, or the transcript of any other recording Free demo of 3 quizzes, then plans from $49 a month Writing the questions when the source is a video rather than a document

Every figure read first party from the vendor pages. The column that matters is the second one: unlike LifterLMS, LearnPress has two paid importers that accept CSV as uploaded, so a CSV question set needs no Save As step. Importer prices from small vendors move often and the Mamflow figure is a sale price, so re-check before you buy.

Does LearnPress have a quiz import?

Yes, but only for moving quizzes that already live in LearnPress. The official route is the LearnPress Backup and Migration Tool, a free plugin on WordPress.org with more than 5,000 active installs. It exports courses, lessons, quizzes and questions from one LearnPress site and imports them into another, and it can pull a course across from Tutor LMS or LearnDash.

The format is XML. There is no reader for a spreadsheet, a CSV or a Word document anywhere in the core plugin or in this tool, and a review on its own WordPress.org page asks for CSV for exactly that reason. If your questions were written in Excel, Google Sheets or anywhere outside WordPress, the free route has nothing to open.

Knowing that before you build the file saves an evening. People find an Import screen, assume the format problem is solved, and discover the XML requirement only after the spreadsheet is finished.

Can I import LearnPress quiz questions from a CSV or Excel file?

Yes, with a paid importer, and on LearnPress CSV is accepted directly. The WP Plugins For You importer reads Excel files, CSV files and a linked Google Sheet. The Mamflow Quiz Importer reads CSV, JSON and XLSX and is built for LearnPress 4.x. WP Sheet Editor imports a CSV with a column mapping step and can update quizzes that already exist.

That makes LearnPress the easiest of the WordPress LMS plugins to feed from a question generator. On LifterLMS none of the importers reads CSV, so every file needs converting to a workbook first. On LearnPress the CSV you exported can go straight into the importer once its columns match the template.

The work that remains is mapping. Each importer publishes its own template with its own column names. Open our CSV and the importer sample side by side, copy the stem, option, correct answer and explanation columns across, and upload. It is a few minutes of copying, not an afternoon of writing.

What is the best LearnPress quiz importer plugin?

For most single site course owners, the WP Plugins For You importer. It costs $75 for one site, reads Excel, CSV and Google Sheets, supports single and multiple choice questions with up to 10 options since version 2.0.1, and can assign one quiz to several courses from the file. That last feature matters if you reuse a knowledge check across course versions.

Mamflow is the budget pick. Its Quiz Importer for LearnPress is listed at $39 and was on sale at $11 when we checked, as a one time payment with a 30 day money back guarantee. It covers true or false, single choice, multiple choice and fill in the blanks, and reads CSV, JSON and XLSX. For a one off load of a question bank it is hard to argue with.

WP Sheet Editor is a different kind of tool. It turns LearnPress content into an editable spreadsheet inside WordPress, so it earns its price when you maintain many quizzes and want to bulk edit them, not only import new ones. If you only need to load questions once a term, the dedicated importers are simpler.

What question types does LearnPress support?

Four in the free core plugin: true or false, single choice, multi choice and fill in blanks. Single choice has exactly one correct answer, multi choice allows several, and all four are graded automatically, so a free LearnPress site can run a real assessment without anyone marking it.

Sorting choice, where the learner drags items into the correct order, comes from the Sorting Choice add-on at $19 for one site. The Random Quiz add-on at $29 draws a random selection from your question bank for each attempt, which makes shared answers far less useful. Both are included in the Pro Bundle.

For bulk import the practical ceiling is the four core types. Both spreadsheet importers document true or false, single choice, multiple choice and fill in the blank. Sorting questions are authored in the quiz editor, because the answer is an order rather than an option.

How much does LearnPress Pro cost?

The LearnPress Pro Bundle is $299 for one site, listed against a regular price of $710. It is a lifetime license with 12 months of updates and support, and further years of updates cost $209 for one year, $389 for two or $538 for three. It includes every premium add-on, Sorting Choice, Random Quiz, Gradebook and Assignments among them.

The Semi-Pro Bundle is $149 and includes five add-ons: WooCommerce, Certificates, Gradebook, Assignments and Stripe. It does not include Sorting Choice or Random Quiz, so a buyer choosing it for quiz features gets the gradebook but not the question types.

Neither bundle includes a spreadsheet importer. That is a third party purchase either way, which means a quiz ready LearnPress site is the core plugin plus an importer from $11 to $75, with a ThimPress bundle only if you need the extra types or grading.

Is the LearnPress Pro Bundle worth it for quizzes?

Only if you need Random Quiz, Sorting Choice or the Exam add-on together with the commerce and grading add-ons. Bought on their own, Sorting Choice and Random Quiz cost $48 for one site. That is far less than $299, so a course owner whose only quiz need is randomized draws and ordering questions should buy the two add-ons and skip the bundle.

The bundle starts to pay when the site also sells courses and issues certificates, because WooCommerce, Stripe, Certificates, Gradebook and Assignments each cost money individually. For a site that already needs those, the quiz add-ons come along at no extra cost.

Whichever way you go, budget the questions separately. The importer only moves text you already have, and the built in LearnPress AI drafts from a topic you type, not from the lesson you recorded.

How do I get LearnPress quiz questions from a video lesson?

This is the gap every route above leaves open. The migration tool and all three importers assume the questions already exist as text. The core plugin does ship LearnPress AI, which connects to your own OpenAI key and drafts course outlines and quizzes from a topic and teaching goals you describe. It works from what you type into it. Nothing in its documentation reads a recorded video, so the questions are about the subject in general rather than about what your lesson actually said.

VidQuiz sits in front of that step. Paste the public YouTube link of the lesson, or the transcript of any other recording, and it drafts multiple choice questions with the correct answer marked, writes a one line explanation for each, and attaches a timestamp pointing back at the moment the question tests. You review and edit the set on the page before anything is exported.

Then export the CSV, map its columns into your importer template and upload. Or leave WordPress out of it and export a Google Forms quiz, a QTI package or a printable PDF with the answer key. Questions are drafted from your own recording and every one is editable, so read the set once before it counts toward a grade.

Question type Where it comes from What a generated question set gives you
Single choice Free core plugin The stem, the options and the one correct answer. This is the type a generated set maps onto with no rework
Multi choice Free core plugin The stem and options import, but any second correct option has to be ticked by hand
True or false Free core plugin The statement plus the correct value. Nothing else is needed
Fill in blanks Free core plugin Only after the stem is rewritten with the missing word taken out
Sorting choice Sorting Choice add-on, $19 for one site, or the Pro Bundle The sequence is the answer, so a question with four options does not map onto it
Randomized quiz from a bank Random Quiz add-on, $29 for one site, or the Pro Bundle Not a question type but a draw from your bank, which needs a bank several times larger than the quiz

Core types taken from the LearnPress admin guide for questions, which lists true or false, single choice, multi choice and fill in blanks. Add-on prices from the ThimPress product pages: each is a lifetime license for one site with 12 months of updates. The Semi-Pro Bundle at $149 does not include Sorting Choice or Random Quiz. The Pro Bundle at $299 does.

Why VidQuiz

What you get with learnpress quiz

The writing happens first

Paste a public YouTube link, or the transcript of any other recording, and get the question text, the answer options, the marked correct answer, a one line explanation and a timestamp. No LearnPress import route writes a single question for you.

A CSV the importers already read

Our export is one row per question: the stem, one column per option (four at minimum, up to ten), the correct answer and the explanation. Two LearnPress importers accept CSV as it is, so you are mapping finished columns rather than composing.

Not locked to WordPress

The same set exports as PDF, QTI 1.2, GIFT, a Google Forms CSV or a Blackboard upload file. If the course later moves to Canvas or Moodle, the questions go with it.

What you can do

Everything learnpress quiz import gives you

Paste a YouTube link and VidQuiz reads the video itself; for anything else, upload it with its transcript. Either way it writes the questions and you edit anything before you share. You stay in control of the final quiz.

  • Stock a LearnPress quiz from a recorded lecture or webinar
  • Write end of lesson knowledge checks without composing each one
  • Get a marked answer key instead of setting one by hand
  • Produce a CSV to map into a LearnPress quiz importer template

Questions about learnpress quiz

The free LearnPress Backup and Migration Tool reads and writes XML only, the file it produced itself. Spreadsheet import needs a third party plugin: WP Plugins For You reads Excel, CSV and Google Sheets, Mamflow reads CSV, JSON and XLSX, and WP Sheet Editor reads CSV. So on LearnPress a CSV question set can be uploaded directly once its columns match the importer template.
Only if the questions already live in another LearnPress, Tutor LMS or LearnDash site, because the free Backup and Migration Tool moves XML between installs. Loading questions written anywhere else needs a paid importer. The cheapest we found is the Mamflow Quiz Importer, listed at $39 and on sale at $11 when we checked, as a one time payment.
The WP Plugins For You importer supports single and multiple choice questions with up to 10 options since version 2.0.1. Our CSV writes four option columns at minimum and widens to ten when any question has more, so the two line up without trimming. The LearnPress quiz builder itself lets you add options by hand as needed.
Yes. The core plugin includes LearnPress AI, which connects to your own OpenAI API key (usage is billed by OpenAI) and generates course outlines, lesson ideas and quizzes from a topic and teaching goals you describe. Its documentation does not describe reading a video, so if the quiz should test what a recorded lesson actually said, draft it from the recording instead.
The written question set. Paste a public YouTube link or a transcript and get question text, the answer options, the marked correct answer, a short explanation and a timestamp for each item, exported as CSV, PDF, QTI or a Google Forms quiz. It does not write into WordPress for you, so you still upload through the importer you licensed, but the authoring is done.
